Bridgerton: 10 Best Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit

Bridgerton: 10 Best Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit

Bridgerton season 2 was recently released and most of the fans who binge-watched the entire season are now desperately waiting for season 3. According to reports, the next season is set to follow Benedict Bridgerton’s Cinderella-like romance with Sophie Beckett, with many rumors being put out on platforms, such as Reddit, as to who might be cast in the new lead’s shoes (via Hello Magazine).

Also on Reddit, many Bridgerton fans are also sharing their unpopular opinions on the overall show, with some proving to either be extremely interesting or rather controversial.

Penelope Is One Of The Best Characters

Penelope Featherington is one of the major characters of the show. At the end of season 1, she was revealed to be the face behind Lady Whistledown (which is one of the biggest plot twists in Bridgerton). Many consider her to be an unethical writer, who plays with other people’s lives to achieve literary success.

However, not all fans agree with this notion. A Redditor, LetterComplex, describes in detail why they love Penelope so much. In their words, “Girls like Penelope are never the protagonists of their own story. And for the first time in her life she finally felt seen, she finally had something that was hers. Under the name of Lady Whistledown, she was finally the star. And even though she went about it the wrong way, what she told Eloise was absolutely true: at least she was doing something.”

The Duke Is Not Missed

Simon or The Duke was the star of season 1 and when it was announced that he would not be returning in season 2, a lot of people were quite shocked. However, a Reddit user, LordyIHopeThereIsPie that “Don’t miss the Duke at all. He IMO isn’t a great actor.”

Many fans wouldn’t agree with this statement for Regé-Jean Page’s character had an interesting arc. He convincingly showed Simon’s qualms with fatherhood, had his own inner conflict to deal with, and had great chemistry with the other actors as well. Fans really did look forward to seeing how great of a father and husband he could have been as well. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

Colin And Penelope Should Be Together

A Reddit fan, vienibenmio, says, “Apparently me shipping show Colin and Penelope is unpopular, lol.” Other fans with the same opinion who have read the books say that right now they may seem not a good match but they are meant to be a great couple. The user, DarkBitterSea, comments, “Me too. It’s hard that we have to watch Colin be an idiot for 3 seasons before he wises up.”

At present, they don’t seem like they would make a great couple. Penelope is obsessed with Colin but Colin, who has been hung up on Marina for a long time, sees Pen as a loyal friend. Near the end of season 2, it felt like something might happen between them but then Colin insulted her by telling his friends that he can’t imagine courting her ever (which makes fans believe that she deserves much better).

Daphne’s Story Is The Least Interesting

Season 1 of the show followed Daphne Bridgerton’s story and, along with Simon, she was the star. However, not everyone enjoyed her story when compared to the stories of her siblings. A Reddit user, punkieboosters, “I liked Daphne’s story the least of all the siblings, so I couldn’t care less that the Duke isn’t around this season.”

This might be a polarizing opinion as many fans actually loved Daphne’s story. Not only was it about an empowering young woman who took agency and control over her life but she also took power into her hands, fought to be with the man she loves, and to be a good mother.

More Steamy Scenes

The Redditor, LordyIHopeThereIsPie, shared their unpopular opinion about season 2, which is that they “wish there were more sex scenes. I love the wedding night scene between Kate and Anthony in the book and would have loved to have seen it on screen.”

In the case of some couples, the steaminess can be conveyed without the use of explicit sex scenes and Kate and Anthony are one of them. They have a great deal of chemistry and despite not having many sex scenes, it didn’t dampen their love story because the couple has some of the most romantic moments in Bridgerton season 2.

Daphne And Simon Were Preferable Before They Got Married

There seems to be a lot of unpopular opinions surrounding Daphne and Duke. A Redditor, kaguraa, shares several unpopular opinions, one of them being, “I preferred Simon and Daphne before they got married. I didn’t like the drama post-wedding.”

The drama after their wedding showed that it’s not always “happily ever after” once two people, who are in love, get married. Through Daphne and Simon’s story, the Netflix show demonstrates the realistic side of marriage and that love is not always enough. This made the show different from other period romances.

Featheringtons Are More Interesting Than The Bridgertons

An extremely unpopular opinion that will be shocking to a lot of fans is a Reddit user, amberbrainwaves, saying that “I think the Featheringtons are more interesting than the Bridgertons.”

Featheringtons do provide comic relief at times, but most fans find them annoying and their subplot is never interesting enough to be distracted from the main plot. Season 2 contained a lot of screen time for the family and fans weren’t happy about that, especially when they were too invested in the Anthony-Kate-Edwina drama.

Edwina Doesn’t Deserve The Hate

Edwina is one of the best characters introduced in Bridgerton after season 1. However, she is a character that fans have differing opinions about it. The Reddit fan, kaguraa, argues, “other than the sister comment, I don’t get the hate for Edwina. Yes, she liked Anthony but she wouldn’t have been in this position if Anthony and Kate hadn’t kept pushing her to marry Anthony. Obviously, she will feel betrayed.”

Although Edwina is a great character, there were moments where audiences found her annoying at times because of her ignorance and her naivety. The fact that she was closest to Kate but still couldn’t see the blatant attraction between Kate and Anthony until the very last minute makes her seem incredibly foolish.

Eloise Is Great

A Redditor, allie131, says that their unpopular opinion is “Apparently that I like Eloise. I guess maybe because I am not an overly feminine female (rarely wear dresses and have maybe worn makeup 3 times in my life) and I can see myself in her. Yes, she gets a bit repetitive with her anti-society stuff but I think most of that is her anxiety from not fitting in.”

While it’s great that the viewers are able to see themselves in the characters, it is understandable why Eloise can sometimes be unlikeable (especially in season 2 when she acts like a brat most of the time). Not only are fans not happy about how cruel she was towards her best friend, Penelope, after knowing her secret but her behavior towards her sister and mother is mostly rude.

Anthony Is Better Than Simon

Simon or The Duke won so many hearts in season 1 of Bridgerton, thanks to his charming personality. However, that doesn’t mean that Anthony Bridgerton is not gaining his own fan following. A Reddit user, DragonflyFuture, prefers Anthony over Simon. Another Reddit user “also loved Anthony over Simon […as] Jonathan Bailey is a revelation.”

Just because Jonathan Bailey is a great actor and his portrayal of Anthony is impeccable, that doesn’t mean that Rege is a bad actor. Fans fell in love with The Duke because of how convincing he was while dealing with Duke’s childhood trauma. Not to mention, he broke so many stereotypes as a Black aristocrat in the Regency era so, his performance should be applauded as well.
