Summit Entertainment has officially announced that Breaking Dawn – the concluding entry in the mega-popular Twilight Saga – will be out in theaters on November 18, 2011.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Twilight fans, between confirming that Bill Condon is directing Breaking Dawn, Condon’s Facebook letter to fans of werewolf/vampire/angst-ridden teenager series, and now the announcement of Breaking Dawn‘s release date.
That’s not forgetting the recent release of a new trailer for Eclipse, the third Twilight Saga film – with the movie itself due out in June no less. To say that fan anticipation for Eclipse – a film which will involve a war between the werewolves and vampires in addition to the theatrics of the Bella/Edward/Jacob love triangle – is as high as ever would be more than a bit of an understatement.
Oddly enough, the wait between the release of Eclipse and Breaking Dawn – around a year and a half – will be the longest wait Twilight-lovers will have endured between films. It’s a matter that calls attention to the – rather impressive – fact that the 2008 Twilight movie, last year’s New Moon, and Eclipse have all been released over a period of just over 1 1/2 years.
Admittedly, Breaking Dawn is not only the longest of the Twilight novels, it is also arguably the most “adult” chapter in the series – in terms of sexual content and graphic material, that is. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg – who penned the previous Twilight films – has already assured the public that Breaking Dawn will not receive the dreaded R-rating, which would complicate matters for the many teenage fangirls (and fanboys – they do exist ;-)) eager to see the film in theaters.
Although we’ve previously reported that Breaking Dawn would be broken down into two films – a la Harry Potter and the Death Hallows 3D – we’re only getting a single release date at the moment. Add to that the fact that Summit Entertainment did not mention anything about the final Twilight film being split in half during their official confirmation of Bill Condon as director, and it forces one to wonder if Summit is still moving forward with their two-film format for Breaking Dawn.
Of course, this issue does raise the question: should Breaking Dawn be broken into two films? Or can its plot be encapsulated in a single movie, like the other entries in The Twilight Saga?
