Bonnie Gordon Continues A Legendary Roddenberry Star Trek Legacy

Bonnie Gordon voices the USS Protostar’s computer in Star Trek: Prodigy. The American actor and parody nerd music singer has voiced other roles on the 3D animated children’s series, including crew members and other ship computers, but stars as the computer’s voice on the 24th century’s USS Protostar. The role picks up a Star Trek legacy initially played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who – among other roles – voiced the ship’s computer in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode of Star Trek: Picard, and most of the Star Trek movies.

A Trekkie since her time as a closing cast actor at Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas, Bonnie Gordon’s varied, exciting creative and work projects demonstrate her commitment to the long-running science-fiction franchise. In an interview with geekgirlauthority.com in 2022, Gordon stated, “I feel like I’m taking over a legacy by being the ship’s computer.” In episode 403 of A Strange New Pod in 2021, Gordon shared her desire to follow in Barrett-Roddenberry’s footsteps with a role on one of Star Trek’s live-action shows.

Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman thanks the fans for saving Star Trek: Prodigy at NYCC, and here’s an update on season 2 coming to Netflix.

Bonnie Gordon Continues Majel Barrett-Roddenberry’s Legacy As Star Trek Computer Voice

Prodigy Protostar

With four distinct roles throughout the franchise, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry notably voiced the USS Enterprise-D’s computer in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picking up this significant (and ongoing) legacy, Bonnie Gordon lends her voice to the protostar-powered starship’s computer on Star Trek: Prodigy, also playing various additional roles in its first season. The Roddenberry Archive has a collected library of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry’s voice based on recordings made in 2008, but Prodigy creators wanted to bring something new and introduce technologies that hadn’t previously been seen. Gordon’s casting came after providing scratch vocals for two other characters, ultimately going on to voice nine separate roles in Star Trek: Prodigy, including the Protostar’s computer.

Bonnie Gordon also appears in Star Trek: very Short Treks, voicing multiple roles over three episodes. Active at fan conventions and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, Gordon has performed for over a decade at The Magic Castle, a Hollywood magicians’ club, and is part of nerd-parody music duo The Library Bards. Gordon began her acting career in theater before branching into film and television roles, voice-over, solo, and comedy-group music. Gordon had a recurring role in The Quest (2014) and performed in Teaching A Robot To Love at the Hollywood Fringe Festival (2022). Gordon is also known for voice-over work on various video games, including Rainbow Mika in Street Fighter V.

Bonnie Gordon Will Return In Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Following the fan campaign to save the show after Paramount+ canceled it in June 2023, Star Trek: Prodigy was picked up by Netflix, with a second season due in 2024. The story continues with additions to the cast, as Vice Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) leads Star Trek: Prodigy’s cast of young heroes into the newly formed wormhole in search of the missing Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran). Although Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) destroyed the USS Protostar at the end of the first season, Bonnie Gordon will return in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2.

Further continuing the late Majel Barrett-Roddenberry’s legacy, Bonnie Gordon has embraced the Star Trek fandom and franchise with a growing range of creative projects and voice-acting roles. With a dedicated fanbase and news that Star Trek: Prodigy season one will appear on Netflix at Christmas 2023, with season two following in 2024, it’s clear that Star Trek: Prodigys future could be both significant and bright. Bonnie Gordon’s unique blend of personality, talent, and enthusiasm weaves expertly into the satisfyingly rich first season.

Star Trek: Prodigy will be available for streaming on Netflix on December 25, 2023.

All other Star Trek series are available for streaming on Paramount+.
