‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 2 Trailer Mixes Alcohol & Firearms

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 2 Trailer Mixes Alcohol & Firearms

The second season of HBO’s ambitious period drama Boardwalk Empire won’t hit until the fall, but that hasn’t stopped the network from releasing a teaser to whet your appetite.

In 61 seconds, the trailer manages to get fans of the highly-rated series back in the bootlegging mood, and allow ‘Nucky’ Thompson a chance to warn all those who would conspire against his criminal empire.

At the moment, it’s admittedly hard to separate HBO from the success of its newest episodic gem – Game of Thrones; but before ‘winter’ comes, fans can sate themselves with the ongoing drama of Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) battle against all those looking to stake a claim for his prohibition-fueled empire.

As the teaser shows, the deck is not necessarily stacked in Nucky’s favor, but that doesn’t prevent him from warning those waiting in the wings with the simple, but effective statement, “I will ruin you, all of you…”

From the look of things, Nucky’s former protégé Jimmy Darmody (Michale Pitt) has taken it upon himself to venture into the realm of illegal liquor distribution – and he’s not the only one.

The trailer gives us glimpse after fleeting glimpse of the heavy hitters in the Atlantic City crime scene (and beyond) circa 1920. We see Stephen Graham (Snatch, Public Enemies) returning as a young Al Capone, as well as Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar, to those who remember his fantastic performance in The Wire), as Chalky White. We also catch bits of characters that will hopefully continue to play a prominent role in the series, like the eerie, tin-faced Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) and Michael Shannon – embodiment of both Agent Nelson Van Alden and soon General Zod as well.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be any footage of the new addition to the underworld cast – Bugsy Siegel (Michael Zegen), so we’ll just have to wait until the burgeoning crime-king makes his debut sometime during the upcoming season.

However season 2 plays out, it is looking to be as sharp – if not sharper – than the series’ first go-round last year.

Season 1 of Boardwalk Empire was met with the kind of expectations normally reserved for massive Hollywood blockbusters. Given that the pilot – spawned by Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Terence Winter (The Sopranos), and directed by Academy Award-winner Martin Scorsese – was one of the most expensive pieces of television ever produced, perhaps those expectations were not misplaced.

What came next, however, was a complex and compelling story set against some of the most lavish cinematography and detailed sets ever seen on television. Coupled with fantastic performances from the aforementioned Buscemi, Pitt, Graham and Shannon, Boardwalk Empire has helped to further blur the line between what people expect from a television series, and what one very impressive program can deliver.

For its efforts during the first season, the program received many accolades, including a Golden Globe for best television drama.

The teaser for season 2 of Boardwalk Empire serves as more than a simple advertisement of the show’s second season. It accurately illustrates why HBO’s original content reigns supreme, and why the network can be relied on to consistently deliver television of the highest quality.

Before season 2 drops this fall, you can still check out the entire first season of Boardwalk Empire on HBO Go.
