Bo-Katan Officially Makes Pedro Pascal “Daddy” In The Mandalorian

Bo-Katan Officially Makes Pedro Pascal “Daddy” In The Mandalorian

Din Djarin and Grogu have been a clan of two since The Mandalorian season 1, but Bo-Katan Kryze has officially made Din a “daddy” in season 3, episode 2 “The Mines of Mandalore.” This is a big development for The Mandalorian‘s two leads, demonstrating how their relationship has grown throughout the series, and how it could continue to evolve in season 3. While this observation comes from Bo-Katan, rather than Din Djarin himself, it’s telling that the other major characters clearly see him as Grogu’s father. Given Star Wars‘ track record with father-son relationships, there are many different ways that this dynamic can be developed further.

Grogu’s emotional attachment to Din Djarin has been a source of conflict in The Mandalorian and its spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett, with something always managing to come between the two. Din had Grogu train with Luke Skywalker because he thought that’s where he belonged, but the bond between the two made it hard for them to say goodbye, with Grogu having to choose between becoming a Jedi and seeing his friend again. With Din Djarin on a quest to rejoin his clan, it’s possible he may have to make a similar choice, especially since Bo-Katan has made him a “daddy” in The Mandalorian.

Bo-Katan Officially Confirms Din Djarin Is Considered Grogu’s “Dad”

Din Djarin was officially labeled as Grogu’s “dad” by Bo-Katan while she and the foundling searched for him in the mines beneath Sundari. After fighting off a group of Alamites, Bo-Katan turned and asked Grogu “Did you think your dad was the only Mandalorian?” Other characters have certainly viewed Din Djarin as Grogu’s father figure before, but hearing Bo-Katan call him a dad to Grogu directly is a big deal. Grogu started as an innocent whom Din felt compelled to protect, then a foundling under his care, and finally someone he had a deep bond with. Now, however, their relationship is very clearly defined as that of a father and son.

The only remaining question is whether Din Djarin is ready to call himself a dad, as well as his priorities when it comes to Grogu. Din always struggled when it came to forming emotional bonds beyond his creed, refusing to admit that he simply wanted to see Grogu again in The Book of Boba Fett. Season 3 has shown that Din is training Grogu to be a Mandalorian, but that also stems from Grogu being a foundling, not just their having a father-son relationship. Since Din is determined to rejoin his clan, this could conflict with fully embracing Grogu as a son, forcing him to make a similar choice to Grogu’s.

Will The Mandalorian’s Found-Family Continue To Expand?

Another important question is whether Din Djarin’s found-family will continue to expand in The Mandalorian season 3. Apart from his father-son relationship with Grogu, Din has made many important connections throughout the show, with Peli Motto and Greef Karga serving as Grogu’s honorary aunt and uncle, respectively. If Din fully embraces Grogu as his own son, potentially leaving his clan’s strict creed behind in the process, then he could form new relationships as well. The Mandalorian episode “Chapter 4: Sanctuary” already addressed that Din could start a family if he let go of the creed, so his relationship with Grogu opens more possibilities.

All of this hinges on what path Din Djarin will choose in The Mandalorian season 3, and his choice will likely affect Grogu as well. Thanks to Bo-Katan, Din has bathed in the waters beneath Mandalore, which means he has redeemed himself in the eyes of his clan. However, his persistence seems to have reignited a spark of hope in Bo-Katan, meaning he could also join her if she decides to retake Mandalore. Whether Din Djarin sticks to his creed or joins a different sect of Mandalorians, Bo-Katan still confirmed that he is Grogu’s daddy, and time will tell how and when their family grows in future seasons.
