Bluey’s New Special Pays Off The Show’s Most Devastating Subplot 2 Years Later

Spoilers are ahead for Bluey season 3’s finale, “The Sign.”

The latest super-sized episode of Bluey, “The Sign,” finally pays off a widely acknowledged fan theory, turning the devastating subplot into a much-needed happy ending. Packed with references to earlier episodes, “The Sign” clocks in at an impressive 28 minutes — the length of four regular-length Bluey episodes. The poignant entry takes its name from a “For Sale” sign that appears outside the Heeler home: Bluey’s family is set to move to a new city, and everyone has mixed feelings about it. Amid the massive change, the Heelers attend the wedding of Bandit’s brother, Radley, to Frisky.

As Bluey, Bingo, Chilli, and Bandit navigate the impending move, Rad’s wedding gives them a reason to celebrate in the wake of the upheaval. One of the best episodes of Bluey, “The Sign’s” central gathering is also a perfect way for Bluey to honor past stories and characters. More than any other episode, “The Sign” is brimming with small, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments that call back to earlier installments in the three-season series. One of the most compelling moments from the special season finale unfolds in a matter of seconds, and involves Chilli’s once-estranged sister, Brandy.

Throughout the first three seasons of the ultra-popular show, Bluey‘s Heeler family tree seems to grow all the time thanks to the gradual introduction of Bandit and Chilli’s siblings. Earlier in Bluey season 3, the show’s 31st episode, “Onesies,” introduced Chilli’s estranged sister, Brandy (Rose Byrne). While Chilli and Brandy are cordial enough, something has clearly formed a rift between the sisters, which makes “Onesies” the first time Brandy really connects with her nieces, Bluey and Bingo. However, two years after “Onesies” initially aired in Australia on June 17, 2022, Aunt Brandy returns to the screen in “The Sign.”

Some of Bluey‘s moments for adults are the series’ most rewarding. The show’s writers aren’t afraid to tackle challenging topics, though they are often relegated to an episode’s subtext. The new 28-minute-long special of Bluey pays off a universally accepted — and incredibly devastating — subplot revolving around Bluey’s aunt. In a montage toward the end of “The Sign,” eagle-eyed viewers can spot a very pregnant Brandy speaking with her sister. Given everything Brandy has been through, the fact that she’s pregnant is a powerful moment — even if the reveal unfolds rather quietly in the background.

Bluey’s Season 3 Finale Gives Brandy’s Story A Happier Ending

One of many examples of Bluey tackling a serious topic, “Onesies” depicts Brandy’s long-time struggles with infertility. Unable to have children of her own, Brandy found it difficult to visit her sister, hence why she kept her distance from the Heelers for four years. In particular, Bingo, who looks a lot like Brandy and Chilli, pulls at Brandy’s heartstrings. Chilli tells Bluey that Brandy looks so sad watching Bingo play because Brandy wants something that she can’t have. Ahead of Bluey season 4, it’s lovely to see Brandy well on her way to being a mother.
