Blue Beetle’s Shocking Twist Sets Up A Perfect DCU Casting

Blue Beetle’s Shocking Twist Sets Up A Perfect DCU Casting

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for DC’s Blue Beetle

The surprising ending twist in DC’s Blue Beetle sets up a perfect casting for the new DCU. Provided the Blue Beetle franchise receives the green light for future sequels, the hope would be that the legacy of the Blue Beetle mantle can be further explored. With the confirmation that Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is the third Blue Beetle in the DC continuity just like in the original comics, there’s a great opportunity to cast one of the previous Beetles with a major fan-favorite actor (especially after the movie’s biggest surprise).

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle is one of the final DC films from Warner Bros. to be released before the new DCU envisioned by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, Gunn has already confirmed that Jaime Reyes is the DCU’s first hero with his own Superman: Legacy being the first DCU movie set to release in 2025. Regardless, Blue Beetle’s post-credits scene sets up a major twist for the future of the franchise, opening the door for the perfect casting in the upcoming universe.

Blue Beetle’s Ending Sets Up Ted Kord For Blue Beetle 2

Blue Beetle’s Shocking Twist Sets Up A Perfect DCU Casting

Following Blue Beetle’s ending with Jaime Reyes bonding with the alien Scarab known as Khaji Da and defeating both Lt. Carapax and Victoria Kord, it was revealed in the post-credits scene that Ted Kord, the previous Blue Beetle, was still alive. Having gone missing years prior with Victoria taking over his company, Ted’s whereabouts were unknown even to his daughter Jenny (Bruna Marquezine). However, a recorded albeit damaged video begins to play in Ted’s secret base, saying that he had a message for his daughter and confirming that he is still alive.

Naturally, Ted can now be featured in a potential Blue Beetle 2 and elsewhere in the new DCU. The second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord is quite unlike the first Beetle Dan Garrett or Jaime Reyes, both of whom were chosen by the Scarab and granted its power. Instead, Ted relied on his fortune to create gadgets and vehicles to fight crime before he inexplicably went missing. With several pieces of his arsenal being featured, it would certainly be exciting to see Ted himself in the new DCU. He could even become a mentor to Jaime now that Reyes has embraced his new role with Khaji Da.

The DCU Can Deliver On Jason Sudeikis’ Perfect Ted Kord Casting

Having been rumored and hoped for long before Blue Beetle’s release in theaters, the absence of Ted Kord in the first Blue Beetle movie means there’s still a chance for DC Studios to cast fan-favorite actor Jason Sudeikis in the role of the Blue Beetle who preceded Reyes. Coming off the massive success that was Ted Lasso, the SNL-alum would be perfect to play Ted Kord (beyond the meta-satisfaction of Sudeikis playing another character named Ted). With Kord’s scatterbrained personality and great sense of humor already being referenced in the first Blue Beetle, Kord does seem like the ideal DC superhero for Sudeikis.

Likewise, an abstract family portrait painted by Kord’s late wife seems to depict a look for Ted that Sudeikis could pull off. At any rate, the hope is that DC’s Blue Beetle will have a successful performance at the box office, warranting a future with sequels and even appearances in other DCU projects. It would certainly allow for more explorations into the Blue Beetle legacy and a future appearance from Ted Kord to actually happen (one hopefully provided by Sudeikis himself).
