Blue Beetle 2 Plans Reveal A Way More Terrifying Villain For The DCU Reboot’s First Hero

A Blue Beetle sequel promises to be even more exciting than the first movie, as the revealed plans for the character’s next adventure hinge on a more frightening villain for the DC Universe hero to face. Blue Beetle saw the debut of Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, a regular young adult who becomes bonded with Khaji-Da, an alien scarab that completely changes his life, giving him a powerful technological armor. Despite the movie being developed before James Gunn and Peter Safran became DC Studios’ co-CEOs, Maridueña’s Blue Beetle was confirmed to be one of the canon characters of the new DCU.

Gunn’s new DC Universe starts next year with the animated Creatures Commandos series. The only other dated project for the DCU at the moment is 2025’s Superman: Legacy, though several movies such as Swamp Thing and series like Booster Gold — the latter of which could include Blue Beetle — were already announced. As the first character of the new DC Universe to debut, Blue Beetle could have another solo entry as part of the upcoming DCU movies slate, and while Susan Sarandon’s Victoria Kord offered him an intelligent foe and Raoul Trujillo’s Carapax gave him a physical challenge, the revealed plans for Blue Beetle 2 include a more exciting villain for Jaime.

Blue Beetle May Face The Reach In DCU Sequel

Blue Beetle 2 Plans Reveal A Way More Terrifying Villain For The DCU Reboot’s First Hero

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto revealed that he wants to bring in The Reach for a potential sequel. According to Soto, his plan is to have “Jaime helping Khaji-Da take over The Reach and liberate all the scarabs” from the evil empire’s control. Both the comics and popular animated series Young Justice have shown that The Reach is a scary group, possessing advanced technology and several scarabs. That would make Blue Beetle 2 a bigger film than the first, surpassing the stakes of Blue Beetle‘s story. Check out the full quote below:

We did an impressionistic approach in the title sequence but for us, we want to let Khaji be able to tell us its story and to show us, at the end of the day, The Reach. Having that moment of Jaime helping Khaji-Da take over The Reach and liberate all the scarabs from the Imperial yoke from that colonizing race, it’s also the Latino story.

Going by what Blue Beetle revealed of Jaime’s scarab, if just Khaji-Da is so powerful, the prospect of having the DC Universe’s first hero go up against The Reach, who would have an army of scarabs, is exciting. By featuring The Reach, Blue Beetle 2 could even see other DCU heroes appear to help Maridueña’s character, as The Reach is an alien race of conquerors, which could lead to an attempt to invade Earth. If the fight only takes place on whatever planet Khaji-Da came from at the start of Blue Beetle, then a few Green Lanterns could show up to assist Jaime.

Will Blue Beetle 2 Actually Happen?

Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes with a Hand to His Mouth in Blue Beetle

Despite Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes being announced as the first confirmed character of the new DC Universe to debut, Blue Beetle itself was not made as part of the DCU, with the universe’s first film being Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. That, along with Blue Beetle‘s poor box office, makes Blue Beetle 2‘s future uncertain. While the situation might not be ideal, there are a few key factors in favor of Blue Beetle 2, with the first film seeing better reception than most entries in the DCEU and Blue Beetle‘s cast falling into the fans’ graces. News about the status of Blue Beetle 2 should come after the DCU gets rolling.
