Black Mirror Season 5 Trailer Teases Three Twisted New Episodes

Netflix has released the first trailer for season 5 of Black Mirror, the critically-acclaimed anthology series about the dark potential of technology and the future. This season’s featured cast includes pop singer Miley Cyrus, Avengers star Anthony Mackie, Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott, and the trailer confirms that the new season will release in just a few weeks, on June 5.

Since we’ve already had one Black Mirror release since season 4, in the form of the interactive story Bandersnatch, Black Mirror season 5 is shorter than usual, with just three episodes. The series was created by Charlie Brooker and is executive produced by Brooker and Annabel Jones.

It looks like Scott will star in an episode about a man who is driven insane by modern society’s obsession with phones. Mackie and Abdul-Mateen will star in another episode, and Cyrus will play a virtual reality pop star. This season also stars Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin, all of whom can be spotted in the trailer. Check it out below:

As the trailer reminds us, Black Mirror has so far explored how technology could influence everything from privacy, to sex, to work, to family, and even the afterlife. The show started out on the UK network Channel 4, where it ran for two seasons before being picked up by Netflix for a further two seasons. Black Mirror has drawn critical acclaim for episodes like the uplifting romance “San Junipero” and the dark thriller “Crocodile,” and has starred actors like Bryce Dallas Howard, Jesse Plemons, Jon Hamm, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

While some Black Mirror fans may be disappointed by the shorter season, it’s worth noting that the first two seasons of the show were also comprised of just three episodes, so this is something of a return to the show’s roots. And if you find yourself still wanting more after watching all of Black Mirror season 5, you can always go back and try to explore all of the branching paths in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The success of that release has led Netflix to invest in more interactive content, like the Bear Grylls adventure You vs. Wild, so it’s possible we’ll see another interactive episode of Black Mirror in the future.

Black Mirror season 5 will release June 5, 2019 on Netflix.
