Black Adam Will Reportedly Feature Adrianna Tomaz

Adrianna Tomaz aka Isis will reportedly be a significant character in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Black Adam movie. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been attached to the role of Teth Adam/Black Adam for quite some time. Like his comic book counterpart, the DC character shares the same skill set/powers as Shazam (who will not be in the film). As an ancient Egyptian predecessor of the latter, Black Adam is a much darker character. Johnson has repeatedly hyped his character’s ability to redefine the DCEU’s hierarchy of power.

Despite being an origin film, Black Adam will also feature a handful of other key DC players. Johnson has confirmed his film will introduce the Justice Society of America (JSA). Black Adam’s rich history with the team makes their inclusion a perfect opportunity for Warner Bros. to kick off a new chapter of the DCEU. Courtesy of casting breakdowns and script leaks, JSA members like Hawkman, Stargirl, Atom Smasher, Cyclone, and the sorcerer, Dr. Fate are all likely to appear.

According to The Illuminerdi, Adrianna Tomaz is also set to make her debut in Black Adam. An early draft of the film’s script shows Adrianna/Isis playing a significant role. The script analysis revealed scenes featuring Adam, Adrianna and her son Aziz (a new character). In those scenes, Adam has awoken from a long slumber and is promoting his archaic outlook of death and destruction to the young Aziz. The moment is clearly meant to be humorous as it plays off Adam’s history as an Egyptian dictator. Adam also seems to be suffering from amnesia, not knowing how or why he has awakened. Adrianna’s role in Black Adam is both reminiscent of and a departure from her comic book counterpart.

The cinematic adaptation of Tomaz depicts her as a strong and independent middle eastern woman. In DC Comics’ 52, Adrianna is introduced as an Egyptian slave given to Black Adam as a gift. After warming to Adrianna, Adam retrieves the magical amulet of Isis and gives it to Adrianna, making her the Egyptian goddess of nature. Isis’ calming presence helps Black Adam transition from supervillain to anti-hero. While depictions of Isis have varied across television, the most recent version of the character is known as the female counterpart to (and wife of) Adam.

It’s clear that Black Adam’s Adrianna will be a faithful, albeit indirect adaptation; Adrianna is neither a mother nor a free woman in the source material. It’s unlikely her character in Black Adam will retain her comic book name; however, the mother depicted in Black Adam will clearly be inspired by Isis (inevitably taking up that mantle). The film’s domestic dynamic, as well as Adrianna’s integrity, will aid Adam’s assimilation as he redefines the DCEU.
