Big Mouth’s 10 Best Celebrity Guest Stars

Big Mouth’s 10 Best Celebrity Guest Stars

With a new season on the cards and the hormone monster-centered spinoff, Human Resources, finding a good degree of success in its own right, now is a great time to be a fan of Big Mouth. The show’s uniquely honest sense of humor and cast of characters have endeared it to fans, and the voice acting has played no small part in this.

In addition to the main cast, the show has frequently featured celebrity voices for characters in the show, some even returning as recurring characters. From Jon Hamm to Hugh Jackman, some iconic actors have been guests in the show, as well as comedians and personalities from Hollywood and beyond.

Jon Hamm – Season 1 Episode 9

Big Mouth’s 10 Best Celebrity Guest Stars

It may have been a short guest role for Jon Hamm, and a lot of viewers will have missed this one, but Jon Hamm was one of the biggest stars to appear in season 1 when he voiced a plate of scallops. For Marty Glouberman, scallops really are the enemy as he is fiercely allergic to them.

Despite that, Andrew’s father struggles to say no when the seafood is available, especially when they’re seductively voiced by Jon Hamm. The scallops get Marty to meet them at a dumpster but, even with the voice of the Mad Men star, they aren’t able to convince him to give in to his unwise temptations.

Martin Short – Season 3 Episode 3

Jay and Gordie in Big Mouth musical number The Spectrum of Sexuality

Martin Short has shown he is a man of many talents, appearing in a wide array of film and television shows ever since the mid-1980s, but his comedy chops were on full display when he made his appearance on Big Mouth. Playing an aspiring magician in the process of questioning his sexuality in a fictional show, Short’s character appears at the perfect time for Jay.

Some viewers may have come across the Canadian-American actor on Hulu where he stars in the award-winning comedy series Only Murders In The Building, but it is on Canadian Netflix where Jay comes across “Gordie’s Journey” and Short’s magician main character. Concluding his appearance with a charming musical number about the wide spectrum of sexuality, some may have wished Short’s appearance was longer.

Kumail Nanjiani – Season 5 Episode 1

Kumail Najianji as himself in Big Mouth

While some stars appear as themselves during guest appearances and others take on the role of a new character that fits into the universe of the show, Kumail Najiani fits somewhere in between, playing an even more buff version of himself who is apparently now something like a fitness vlogger.

Addressing his audience of “Kumaniacs,” Nanjiani extolls the virtues of “No Nut November” to the intrigued central male characters of Big Mouth. The boys remain doubtful but there is no denying the fictional Nanjiani’s passion for the challenge, which he credits with changing his life.

Kristen Schaal – Season 5 Episode 9

Bernie Sanders and Andrew in Big Mouth

Andrew is a character that often finds himself feeling different and isolated from his peers, and his incompetence on the slopes isn’t helping this during a ski trip in season 5. However, his chance meeting with the equally unskilled Bernadette “Bernie” Sanders changes this, as he finds himself making a genuine connection.

Animated comedy fans may well have recognized the unique voice of Kristen Schaal playing the awkwardly-named girl, as she applies the talent that won her a primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Sarah Lynn in Bojack Horseman. Considering she also starred as central characters in Bob’s Burgers and Gravity Falls, it’s no surprise that her Big Mouth appearance was also memorable.

Carol Kane – Season 3 Episode 5

The Menopause Banshee in Big Mouth

Portraying menopause as a powerful banshee is an unusual assignment for a voice actor but it was no problem for the Academy Award-nominated actress Carol Kane. More recently known for playing the likable Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt character Lillian Kaushtupper, Kane makes the Menopause Banshee easily the scariest Hormone Monster on the show.

Striking Barbara Glouberman on their spring break trip to Florida, the Menopause Banshee is a delightfully villainous addition to the show although not a welcome addition to Barbara’s life. Springing from Barbara’s chest and speaking in rhyme, the Menopause Banshee does turn out to have some use for good, parting the waters so they can escape from Florida.

Adam Scott – Season 5 Episode 4

Adam Scott as Dylan Keating teaching class in Big Mouth

Though Adam Scott’s best role was as Ben Wyatt in the sitcom Parks and Recreation, his television career has continued to be incredibly successful as he now stars in the critically acclaimed Severance on Apple TV+. Scott doesn’t disappoint in Big Mouth either, playing the charming and charismatic school teacher, Dylan Keating.

By kicking out the books, cursing, and attempting to make Shakespeare relatable to teenagers, the character epitomizes the stereotype of the “cool teacher” and it has a strong effect on Andrew. Putting on a low, growly voice, it’s almost hard to recognize Scott as he shows an admirable commitment to the part.

Mae Whitman – Season 1 Episode 8

Nick Birch and Tallulah Levine in The Head Push episode of Big Mouth

Appearing as a friend of Leah’s called Tallulah Levine in the first season of the show, Mae Whitman played a big part in the memorable episode “The Head Push.” Though she has done plenty of voice acting work, Whitman is mostly known for some great live-action roles in shows like Arrested Development and, more recently, Good Girls.

Her character in Big Mouth is the victim of malicious rumors spread about her by her ex-boyfriend, Daniel, who she had previously confronted for his sexually coercive behavior. Leah finally exposes him during a game of charades at a party and Daniel is forced to leave, his reputation in tatters.

Wanda Sykes – Season 3 Episode 7

The ghost of Harriet Tubman in Big Mouth

Duke Ellington, played by Jordan Peele, has been one of the consistently funniest parts of Big Mouth as the ghost in the attic of Nick’s house who often gives (not always good) advice and direction to the main characters’ lives. In season 3, however, the boys discover that Duke himself had a ghost in his attic.

Nick is understandably a little surprised and envious at the fact Ellington’s advisor was the ghost of abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who is hilariously portrayed by Wanda Sykes as caught between trying to teach the young musician something meaningful and losing her patience with his narcissism.

The Cast Of Queer Eye – Season 3 Episode 10

The cast of Queer Eye on Big Mouth

One member of the makeover show would be a treat on its own but Big Mouth brings the whole cast of one of the best series on Netflix to fall asleep to for a special episode in season 3. Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, and Jonathon Van Ness appear as themselves with the aim of helping Coach Steve.

The jobless Coach Steve is recommended to the Fab 5 by Jay and they soon live up to their reputation, turning the down-on-his-luck gym teacher into a suaver, more handsome but unfortunately not much smarter version of himself. While it was an unexpected crossover, Queer Eye‘s appearance on Big Mouth was one of the most fun.

Hugh Jackman – Season 5 Episode 1

Hugh Jackman as a talking penis in Big Mouth

Appearing in the same episode as Kumail Nanjiani, Hugh Jackman appears as himself but as a talking penis who is attending a seminar being given by Maury. With his very brief appearance, the show would have been forgiven for getting someone to do an impression of the Australian actor, but the fact it’s the real Hugh Jackman only makes the scenario funnier.

After Maury gives a shoutout to the phallic form of the Wolverine actor, Hugh Jackman confesses that he isn’t actually in the right room and should be learning how to make soap rather than hearing Maury’s explicit lecture for Andrew.
