Better Call Saul’s Latest Awards Disappointment Is Its Worst Yet

Better Call Saul’s Latest Awards Disappointment Is Its Worst Yet

Over the years, Better Call Saul hasn’t had much luck during awards season, but the show’s latest disappointment is its worst yet. The Breaking Bad spin-off starring Bob Odenkirk has had many nominations at awards ceremonies since the show began in 2015. It picked up a couple of awards here and there, but nominations are as far as it goes when it comes to the likes of the Golden Globes or the Emmys.

While the show started with huge shoes to fill after the six-season run Better Call Saul got better than Breaking Bad or at least matched its quality. Breaking Bad had already gained a few awards before its final season, but the awards came flooding in after its last run. Unfortunately, Better Call Saul didn’t have that same luck.

Better Call Saul Losing At The Golden Globes, Is Its Worst Yet

With the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul ending, the 2023 Golden Globes was the show’s last chance to land a major award. Sadly, Better Call Saul left empty-handed, making it its worst loss. Better Call Saul was nominated in two categories at the Golden Globes; Best Television Series: Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series: Drama for Bob Odenkirk.

Odenkirk’s performance in Better Call Saul lost out to Yellowstone‘s Kevin Costner, and while it’s hard to argue that Costner wasn’t great, it is a real shame Odenkirk wasn’t recognized for what he did with Saul Goodman over six seasons. A character who started as the comic relief on Breaking Bad turned into one of the most layered characters on television through Odenkirk’s magnetic performance. No complaints for Zendaya, who won the award for the best dramatic actress, but a disservice was made to Rhea Seehorn, who played Kim Wexler, often matching Odenkirk throughout Better Call Saul‘s run, as she didn’t even receive a nomination.

House of the Dragon came out on top in Best Television Drama, a category that also included The Crown, Ozark, and Severance. There is no doubt that House of the Dragon is a great show, but that is at the beginning of its life. It will surely run for years, just like its parent show, Game of Thrones, and has plenty of time to pick up the accolades, assuming it keeps up the same high-quality levels. This was the final bow for Better Call Saul, and picking up the award would have felt earned and then some.

Better Call Saul’s Latest Awards Disappointment Is An Ongoing Trend

Better Call Saul‘s disappointment at the 2023 Golden Globes continues an ongoing trend for the show at the awards. As well as 2023, Bob Odenkirk was nominated in 2016, 17, 18, and 21 but missed out each time. It looked like it was set that the final nomination would be the one to reward his efforts, but no. Better Call Saul was one of the best TV shows in 2022, but with how consistent the show was across its run, surprisingly, 2023 was the only year it was nominated for best drama. And even then, it couldn’t take home the award.

Therefore, Better Call Saul‘s latest awards disappointment is its worst yet, as it will never have another chance. In terms of nominations, the show did much better at the Emmys, as it was nominated in many categories every season. At the end of the day, it’s all about the winner, and a nomination was as far as it ever got at the Emmys, despite the many chances. Despite never taking home the top prize at the major awards, Better Call Saul‘s legacy remains intact among those that followed the show, but it did deserve something for its consistent entertainment, and it is a shame it couldn’t bring home the prize.
