Better Call Saul: Jimmy & Kim’s Tragic End Teased By Showrunner

Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould spills the possibility of a tragic fate for beloved on-screen couple Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler. With 5 seasons, AMC’s Better Call Saul is an American crime drama prequel to the ingenious Breaking Bad. Vince Gillian, who created Breaking Bad, teamed up with producer Peter Gould to create Better Call Saul in 2015. Bob Odenkirk plays show’s lead character Jimmy McGill, a struggling lawyer who transforms into the notorious criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. Rhea Seehorn plays Kim Wexler, Jimmy’s love interest and hardworking attorney with surprises up her sleeve. The show also reprises Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito’s roles from Breaking Bad. Critics have appraised Better Call Saul as one of the best prequels ever created, which went on to earn several awards and nominations.

The highly anticipated season 6 incited compelling fan predictions over what’s to come for the characters. Complex hero/villain Saul Goodman and the iconic Kim Wexler have taken audiences on a wild ride from car accidents caused by exhaustion, an unexpected marriage, and returns to “slippin’ Jimmy” ways, including surprising Breaking Bad character appearances such as Hank Schrader and Lydia Rodarte-Quayle. Season 5 left many fans with questions, one of which concerns Kim Wexler’s unexpected plot twist: has Kim turned to the dark side? And, what does this mean for her and Saul?

During Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television event featuring Odenkirk and Seehorn, Peter Gould shook up these questions even further by revealing that Kim and Saul’s future might be headed toward demise. Gould shared: “We have a lot of ideas about where Jimmy and Kim are going. There’s some ideas which I am so excited about, but there is also a lot of sadness to where this is going.” Season 5 shifted from its central focus on Jimmy McGill’s metamorphosis into drug trafficking legal expert Saul Goodman to Kim Wexler’s evolution from good girl to ruthless mastermind. Odenkirk elaborated: “This year he saw the stakes of that choice. He sees that it is life or death, this choice, played the way he played it. Now the mystery is who is Kim?

Until now, Seehorn’s Wexler has been by Saul’s side as a morally steadfast, hardworking lawyer who can take the high road while still getting stuff done. In one of her best performances yet, Wexler showed audiences an entirely new side of her in the latest season. According to Seehorn, she feels lucky that she “did not think of this as one giant arc of this mask coming off,” and recognizes the obscure, yet intentional baby steps the creators took in unveiling Wexler’s hidden side, from interweaving her backstory and highlighting her propensity to solve other people’s problems. For many, the flip of Wexler’s character was shocking; however, Seehorn expressed that Wexler actually always had a sinister side to her that was bound to fully unleash itself sooner than later.

Better Call Saul has delivered shocking (and maybe not-so-shocking) plot twists after plot twists. Of course, with Kim Wexler not appearing in Breaking Bad, it has always been known that Saul and Kim would eventually part ways. However, with the new knowledge that there is a lot of sadness to be accompanied with this parting, there are so many plausible outcomes on the horizon (and most fans are hoping that Wexler gets a better conclusion than being killed off). Season 6 production is expected to begin later this year and released sometime in 2021, meaning it will be a little while before we learn the star-crossed lovers’ fate. In the meantime, it will be intriguing to see what new fan theories arise following Gould’s latest hint.
