Best PS5 Games Of 2024 (So Far)

Quality game releases for the PlayStation 5 have come frequently throughout the beginning of 2024, continuing a nearly unprecedented string of acclaimed titles all throughout 2023. November 2024 will mark the end of the fourth full year for Sony’s ninth-generation console. This hardware era has notably had a slower infusion of first-party PlayStation exclusives compared to that of the PS4, and that trend continuing doesn’t bode well for the rumored PS5 Pro, which may arrive amid a PlayStation Studios release drought.

However, exclusives alone aren’t enough to constitute a console’s entire library, and even the first couple months of 2024 have already delivered some exceptional games. An incredible number of RPGs are expected to be released in 2024, and a few high-profile ones are already available, but the marquee releases for the PS5 thus far this year include a smattering of genres. From fighting games to metroidvanias, the best PlayStation 5 games of 2024 can be found below.

Originally revealed in 2016, Granblue Fantasy: Relink was hit with numerous delays before it was finally released on February 1, 2024. The wait was well worth it, though, as Relink makes a compelling claim as the Granblue Fantasy series’ best entry yet. The JRPG boasts wonderfully chaotic combat and a charming (if at times a bit rote) story. Screen Rant gave the game 4/5 stars, and it managed a more than respectable aggregate score of 80 on Metacritic.

Metroidvanias remain enduringly popular, as evidenced by Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown‘s 4/5 rating from Screen Rant, and its 86 on Metacritic. The Lost Crown is something of a triumphant return for the series, though its side-scrolling metroidvania elements are quite novel for a Prince of Persia game. It similarly stakes its own claim with a brand-new story, following a member of The Immortals – an elite Persian fighting force – named Sargon.

While the launch of Helldivers 2 in early February 2024 was marred by server and matchmaking errors, it hasn’t stopped the PS5 console exclusive from becoming a sensation. The third-person co-op shooter leverages its live-service elements to embroil players in the Galactic War, where the elite Helldiver units of Super Earth fight the insectoid Terminids and the robotic Automatons on distant planets. The chaos, the gunplay, and the sheer amount of firepower has made Helldivers 2 one of the year’s breakout hits, and earned the game 4.5/5 stars from Screen Rant, and an aggregate score of 82 via Metacritic.

Immortality was originally released in 2022, receiving a PS5 port in January 2024, but that doesn’t stop it from being perhaps the most novel game to arrive on the console this year. Its unique premise and captivating gameplay earned it 4.5/5 stars from Screen Rant, and a Metacritic aggregate of 87. Immortality centers on an actor who’s gone missing, and tasks the player to search through her unreleased films, television interviews, and more to uncover secret footage and clues to the missing person’s fate. Its gameplay is quite unique, and the story that unfolds is wholly unexpected and philosophically engaging.

Persona 3 Reload is a remake of 2006’s Persona 3, but that doesn’t disqualify it as one of the best PS5 games of 2024 thus far. Persona has skyrocketed to success and acclaim in the West following Persona 5‘s release in 2016, making this remade JRPG the perfect opportunity for many newer fans to experience P3 for the first time. The Persona series’ staples are all present – players control a high school student able to summon a Persona, their spirit come to life, and use this ability to fight monsters called Shadows.

Fighting games have been having a banner year, with Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 releasing toward the latter half of 2023, followed by Tekken 8 rounding out the big three in January 2024. Tekken 8 promised to adopt more aggressive gameplay tendencies than its predecessors, and to that end introduced the Heat system, which rewards players for staying on the attack. Cementing its place as one of the genre’s most complex and fulfilling titles, Tekken 8 earned 4.5/5 stars from Screen Rant, and garnered an impressive Metascore of 90.

Pentiment is the first of four games previously exclusive to Xbox consoles to make its way to the PlayStation 5 – Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves are expected to follow suit later this year. A series of murder mysteries is presented in the style of illuminated manuscripts in Pentiment, which not only earned a perfect 5/5 from Screen Rant, but was also our 2022 Game of the Year. Its Metascore is a slightly more muted 86, but Pentiment‘s narrative, art style, and respect for its historical context make it one of gaming’s premier artistic achievments of recent years.

Much like Persona, Like a Dragon seems to finally be getting its due in the West, with Infinite Wealth being one of the year’s greatest highlights so far. The long-running series formerly known outside of Japan as Yakuza has more recently undergone a dramatic shift, moving away from longtime protagonist Kazuma Kiryu to focus on Ichiban Kasuga in 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, who returns to lead Infinite Wealth. Engrossing combat and exploration, married to side content that could constitute a whole game in itself, resulted in Screen Rant giving Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth a perfect 5/5, while the game earned an aggregate of 89 from Metacritic.

The Last of Us: Part 1

The Last of Us Part 2 arguably wasn’t in need of a remaster, but the added content – especially No Return, a roguelike mode – makes The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered the definitive version of the iconic game. Part 2 took some controversial narrative turns after the near universally beloved original game, but Screen Rant‘s perfect 5/5 review reiterates that Remastered is a fresh coat of paint for one of the best stories told in gaming history. The PS5 exclusive carries a similarly lofty Metascore of 90, though that’s slightly lower than the original release’s more impressive 93.

The second part of a trilogy reimagining the seminal Final Fantasy 7, FF7 Rebirth is a more ambitious follow-up to 2020’s FF7 Remake. Its grander scope and interchangeable party members make it a more traditional RPG, more in line with the series’ legacy than last year’s also excellent Final Fantasy 16. With a perfect 5/5 stars from Screen Rant, and a staggering 92 on Metacritic, FF7 Rebirth is definitely the best PlayStation 5 game of 2024 so far.
