The return of a beloved character has been confirmed for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. A sequel to 2021’s Afterlife, the upcoming film will feature the return of the Spengler family as they join forces with the original Ghostbusters to prevent a powerful force known as the Death Chill from freezing New York City and spreading over the entire world. The cast includes Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace reprising their roles alongside the original Ghostbusters cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.
Now, ahead of the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire release date in March 2024, the return of another beloved character has been confirmed by the official Ghostbusters Twitter/X account:
The post announces the return of Slimer “along with a new empire of spirits waiting to be discovered,” some of which are also pictured on the pop-up poster in the video.
Who Is Slimer In Ghostbusters?
Slimer is a beloved character from the Ghostbusters franchise who has appeared in the mainline movies and spinoff media. The green, blob-like ghost with a voracious appetite was first introduced in the original Ghostbusters movie (voiced by director Ivan Reitman) as the titular team is called upon to remove the gluttonous ghost from the Sedgewick Hotel, where he is found feasting on room service leftovers. The character, originally called “Onionhead” or “the Green Ghost,” became so beloved that he returned in the animated series, The Real Ghostbusters, where he was renamed Slimer and served as the team’s mascot and friend.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife – Muncher Hints Slimer Isn’t A One-Off Ghost
The green ghost known as Slimer has always been an oddity in Ghostbusters lore, but Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Muncher looks set to change that.
It remains to be seen how Slimer is depicted in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. However, since Slimer returned briefly in 1989’s Ghostbusters II and appeared to be more intelligent and even capable of driving a bus, it’s likely the upcoming sequel will follow suit, but make no mistake, the mischievous ghost should still be involved in some comedic antics. As teased by the new pop-up poster, Slimer will return alongside a new empire of spirits waiting to be discovered in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
