Beloved 6-Season HBO Show Reportedly Coming To Netflix Soon

The beloved HBO show Sex and the City is reportedly making its way to Netflix, continuing a licensing trend between the two streaming competitors. Created for TV by Darren Starr and based on the works of Candace Bushnell, the comedy show debuted on HBO in June 1998. Considered one of the series that helped push TV forward as a medium, the story followed Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and also starred Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall.

Dylan Byers of Puck reported on social media that Sex and the City is coming to Netflix as part of a licensing deal with HBO. Check out the post below:

Further reporting by The New York Times notes that Sex and the City will begin streaming on Netflix in early April. The comedy will still be available on Max, as well. This does not apply to the sequel series And Just Like That… which has been renewed for season 3 and will remain exclusive to Max. It is unknown how much Netflix is paying for the licensing of Sex in the City.

Why Is HBO Licensing Its Shows To Netflix?

Sex and the City is not the first HBO Original licensed to Netflix, though it may be the biggest and most synonymous with the network so far. Last year, Insecure, Six Feet Under, Ballers, Six Feet Under, and The Pacific were all part of a licensing agreement between Netflix and HBO. Since then, some of the shows have trended on Netflix. The Netflix success is especially true for Ballers, a sports dramedy led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

At one point, just a few years ago, when the so-called streaming wars were at their peak with new competitors like Disney+, it was believed that it would be better for each respective streamer to keep its catalog of television shows and movies exclusive. Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that owns HBO, has been looking for additional revenue to help with its debt, such as canceling movies and shows and licensing content to third parties. But it’s not the only big company that is now sharing some of its catalog with Netflix.

Netflix has recently begun to acquire the rights to some of HBO’s original series, and those shows can be ranked by their overall quality.

Shows owned by Disney, such as LOST and This Is Us, have also been licensed to Netflix. It’s a relatively easy way for companies to earn money while, in theory, allowing Netflix’s subscribers to sample their catalog. It’s a return to the way the streaming landscape used to run, with big shows like Sex and the City available on Netflix.
