Belgravia The Next Chapter Episode 7 Recap: 8 Story Reveals

Warning! SPOILERS about Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7 ahead.

The multiple revelations and developments of Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7 ensured the period drama’s protagonists would be in situations more chaotic than they have ever been, setting up an explosive episode 8 to conclude its first season. Frederick and Clara both came out broken-hearted from the events of the episode, whether because of their relationship and inability to communicate or the multiple betrayals they suffered from people they trusted. Despite the multiple upheavals, Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7’s developments also made it all the more possible for Frederick and Clara to potentially reconcile in the season finale.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7 proved eventful also for the show’s secondary characters, with some finally being reunited and others unjustly accused. Despite the heated exchange and Frederick’s belief Enright truly betrayed him, his butler’s reaction actually proved that what everyone accused him of wasn’t the secret he hid. Moreover, Nell finally found who she went to London to search for, and she couldn’t have reunited with Ellerby without the Duchess of Rochester’s meddling in Clara and Frederick’s affairs. This way, Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7 solved some mysteries and left others to be resolved in episode 8.

8 Ross & Ellerby’s Wishes Proved They Never Really Supported Clara

They only wanted to control her but didn’t listen to her desires

Belgravia: The Next Chapter had already shown how Ross and Ellerby wanted something from Clara, but episode 7’s developments finally revealed how it had more to do with using her or controlling her than getting to know Clara. Mr. Ross only got Clara and Davison out of London because he wanted Clara all for himself, and Davison’s intervention was the only thing that saved Clara from a likely assault. Ross didn’t help Clara and Davison out of the goodness of his heart but wanted to take what he saw as something belonging to Frederick for himself.

While Ellerby’s insistent love declarations were nothing like Mr. Ross’s actions, he still willingly ignored Clara’s wishes to repeatedly tell her his feelings and ask her to run away with him. Stephen believing himself to be in love with Clara didn’t make his actions any less dismissive of her, considering she had reiterated how she saw him as a friend, and how she had never stopped loving Frederick. The last straw proved his willingness to still run away with Clara, misinterpreting the reason behind her visit to Bloomsbury, when he had just found Nell again and learned about her past.

7 Emily’s Preoccupation With James Proved Only Mrs. Dunn Stood By Clara

Clara & Emily’s mother believed her when the Duchess, Frederick & Emily didn’t

Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn and Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

Despite not expressly counting as Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s central characters, Emily still affected their lives a great deal in episode 7. Championing only James’s wellbeing and the future she believed she could have with him made her completely disregard her sister Clara’s struggles, taking the high society’s gossip at face value without truly listening to Clara’s problems, indirectly making her feel even more alone, which prompted Clara’s escape from London. Of all those close to her, Mrs. Dunn was the only one who defended Clara, disregarding the Duchess of Rochester’s suggestions and believing in her younger daughter’s good nature.

6 The Truth Behind Enright’s Letter Wasn’t Revealed – Despite His Firing

Frederick believed Enright betrayed him to the Marquise but she wasn’t the addressee of his letters

Gerard Horan as Enright in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

Mr. Ross’s final letter to Frederick after he stole from him aimed to place the blame on Enright, and Frederick completely fell for his scheming. However, Enright’s reaction proved not only how saddened he was by Frederick thinking that of him, but also how unaware of the whole scheme he was, making his secret letters to France still the biggest unexplained mystery in Belgravia‘s sequel. Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s season finale will surely reveal the truth, and given John Bellasis’ exile to Europe, the secret letters will likely have much to do with Bellasis being Frederick’s biological father.

5 Rochester Hiding The Marquise’s Scheme Showed Frederick He Was Truly Alone

He was supposedly Frederick’s friend but didn’t share the rumors he heard with him

Miles Jupp as Percy the Duke of Rochester in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

Frederick’s first thought when he knew for sure that Marquise d’Etagnac had duped him was to tell the Duke of Rochester the news, even before going home to confront Enright, whom he believed disloyal after Ross led him to believe so. However, the Duke’s reaction showed how imbalanced their friendship was, as he already suspected the Marquise of being a fraud, and he still let Frederick participate in the silver mine venture. The Duke only wanting to protect his reputation and not informing the other victims highlighted how alone Frederick was even among those he considered close in his circle.

4 The Truth About The Marquise Finally Explained Her Scheme

Mathilde Balmadier caused drama as she needed to control Frederick to get his money

Claude Perron as Mathilde Balmadier-Marquise d'Etagnac in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

Marquise d’Etagnac’s final act was to complete her plan to divide Frederick and Clara by spreading rumors about Clara among the high society ladies, hoping that might convince Frederick to separate himself from more of his money. However, Mr. Ross’s investigation into her revealed how Mathilde Balmadier really was a Marquise, but wasn’t truly rich, having acquired wealth by scamming her way through the French high society. Mr. Ross’s plan eventually made her rich by stealing from Frederick, but, had it not, she could have still scammed him at last because of how her Clara gossip eventually got to Frederick.

3 Frederick’s Memories Prove James Could Be Right – Even If He Can’t Accept It

Remembering seeing Susan cheating on Oliver might lead Frederick to forgive James

Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

Alice Eve’s return as Susan Trenchard to Belgravia: The Next Chapter episode 7 via Frederick’s memories fully supported what James told Frederick about his being illegitimate. While remembering how unfaithful Susan was to Oliver wouldn’t be enough to convince Frederick to trust James, it nevertheless proved the plausibility of his brother’s words. Were someone else like Enright or Enright’s letters’ addressee to corroborate James’s words, Frederick might even be willing to forgive his brother, especially considering how James also was never at fault, no matter what Frederick told himself to survive how his father Oliver mistreated him.

2 Clara’s Escape Felt The Only Possible Choice After Everything That Happened

Between Emily not supporting her & Frederick not trusting her, Clara had a lot on her plate

Clara’s decision to run away from London seemed the only possible one, despite trusting Mr. Ross proved immediately a mistake. Between Emily refusing to see her point of view and accusing her of only thinking about herself instead of being “quiet and good” and Frederick’s accusations of causing drama under the Marquise’s influence, Clara couldn’t consider any other option. Having witnessed her parents’ love marriage taught Clara she wanted love, not a marriage in name only, thus making her and Davison’s escape the only way forward for her. Realizing what he lost might also help Frederick finally trust Clara.

1 The Multiple Betrayals Frederick Suffered Opened His Eyes About Clara

She was the only one upfront, who didn’t hide things from him & he shunned her

Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard and Liam Garrigan as Fletcher in Belgravia The Next Chapter episode 7

The two fights between Frederick and Clara in episode 7 already agitated Frederick, but learning about the Marquise and the Duke’s betrayals left him unmoored. Having lost a good chunk of his money and misinterpreted Enright’s letters as another betrayal finally reminded Frederick that he could have trusted Clara’s openness, as she was the only one who hadn’t concealed what she knew, who only wanted to love him and be loved in return. While he might have realized it too late, Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s season finale could reunite them, finally letting them start their marriage the right way.
