Beetlejuice 2: OG Star Confirms Not Returning For Sequel (But Has Intriguing Theory Why)

Geena Davis confirms the Maitlands will not be returning in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Over 36 years since he last materialized in the realm of the living, Michael Keaton’s ghost with the most is loose once more as tragedy calls for three generations of the Deetz family to come home. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara will reprise their roles of Lydia and Delia Deetz, while Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Belucci are set to play all-new characters.

While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘s first trailer has revealed all of its returning characters, Davis has addressed her involvement with the sequel to ET Online. Davis firmly stated that she would not appear in the movie, though the star speculated that Barbara and Adam’s (Alec Baldwin) absence may be due to their character’s inability to age due to their nature as ghosts and being unable to age. Checkout Davis’ theory below:

No, I’m not. I’m not in the remake. Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age… Not that I have. Our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it’s been a while, it’s been a minute.

Beetlejuice 2: OG Star Confirms Not Returning For Sequel (But Has Intriguing Theory Why)

While Davis’ theory makes sense as to why the Maitlands may be absent from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the movie’s central ghostly star may call Davis’ reasoning into question. It would be difficult to imagine any other actor than Keaton stepping into the bio-exorcist’s striped suit, and the reasoning for Betelgeuse’s return could simply be justified by his unique nature as a spirit. Having spent many centuries undead and uniquely cursed, Betelgeuse has existed longer than any other ghost seen in the film, meaning he may have a greater grasp on his form than others, and is therefore showing more wear in his appearance.

8 Original Characters Still Missing From Beetlejuice 2

In addition to Beetlejuice, Lydia, and Delia, there are some great missing original characters who still must return for Beetlejuice 2.

However, despite these explanations, it’s unknown where the Maitlands are during the events of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as they had narrowly avoided being exorcised and had found a peaceful coexistence with the Deetz family by the end of the original movie. Despite this, their potential exile to the Lost Souls Room did show what other realms lay beyond the world of the living and the dead. While the Lost Souls Room represents the worst fate a ghost can endure, perhaps Barbara and Adam circumvented their sentence to haunting and found a happier existence to ascend to after.

Though Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘s release is one of the year’s most anticipated, many returning fans have wondered how many of the movie’s absent characters may be addressed. While certain cast member’s absences are understandable due to real-life actions, the Maitlands’ absence would be noticeably jarring due to them having led the original movie and audiences having learned around the mechanics of the world through them. As viewers await answers, Davis’ theory is an intriguing insight into potential behind-the-scenes reasoning.
