A Dark Beetlejuice Fan Theory Suggests That Beetlejuice Died By Suicide

One Beetlejuice fan theory is the darkest in Tim Burton’s filmography, with it suggesting that Beetlejuice may have died by suicide. Beetlejuice is undoubtedly dead in the events of Beetlejuice, with him residing in the afterlife and having all the powers that come with it. However, the film surprisingly never explains exactly how Beetlejuice died. Beetlejuice, like all of the other characters in the afterlife, had to die somehow, but the film doesn’t reveal what led to his death. However, some clues have allowed fans to put together this incredibly morbid theory.

According to some fans, Beetlejuice may have ended his own life, with this going unexplained in the film. Very little is known about Beetlejuice, with one of the few details of his backstory being that he was once the assistant of Juno in the afterlife before going rogue and becoming a bio-exorcist. During the events of Beetlejuice, the human character Otho jokes that people who end their own lives become civil servants in the afterlife. This is confirmed when the film shows a receptionist who cut her wrists, meaning that Beetlejuice may have met a similar fate.

Beetlejuice’s Original Script Would’ve Shown Beetlejuice’s Death

It seems as if Beetlejuice taking his own life was always an idea that was present in the film, with the original and much darker Beetlejuice script actually showing the character’s death. In the original script for Beetlejuice, the titular character was a murderous child predator who wanted to kill the Deetz family, with the Tim Burton film that is now known removing many of these dark themes. This first draft also revealed that Beetlejuice hung himself after getting drunk and being rejected by a woman, something that isn’t in the final film.

While this original Beetlejuice death scene seems to have confirmed this dark fan theory, some of the circumstances surrounding the script change call its canon status into question. In the final version of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice mentions surviving the Black Death, which wouldn’t match up with this timeline. On top of this, Beetlejuice’s afterlife form doesn’t have any markings of suicide, with the other dead characters in Beetlejuice bearing injuries that show how they died as humans. Thus, the question of Beetlejuice’s death is still up in the air.

Beetlejuice 2 Can Finally Explain How Beetlejuice Died

Now that Tim Burton is returning to the world of Beetlejuice in the sequel, Beetlejuice 2 can finally explain how the character died. It is possible that the sequel could confirm this dark fan theory, revealing the original Beetlejuice death story as canon. It could explain how and why Beetlejuice ended his own life originally, when he did it, and why his afterlife form doesn’t feature his cause of death, wrapping up all of these mysteries and plot holes.

However, it is also possible that Beetlejuice 2 could reveal a different method of death, deconfirming this fan theory. After all, it would make sense for a family film to avoid using the topic of suicide in the backstory of a comedic villain character, with this original plan seeming a bit callous considering how serious the subject is. Beetlejuice 2 has all kinds of opportunities to flesh out Beetlejuice’s backstory, including by revealing his method of death.
