Creator Mike Judge says the Beavis and Butt-Head revival could set up spinoffs in a similar style to Norman Lear’s hit sitcoms. In addition to creating the series, Judge also directed and starred as the two titular teenage slackers as they attend their high school in the American Southwest and cause mayhem in their small town in an effort to pick up women. In between these hijinks, Beavis and Butt-Head also lounge on their couch and critique various music videos and other MTV shows such as Jersey Shore in a similar vein to Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Originally premiering in 1993, Beavis and Butt-Head became a pop culture staple in its seven seasons on MTV, receiving both rave and negative reviews from critics for its satire and lewd humor. The show’s popularity would see Judge branch out into various other forms of media, including the theatrical film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, which received critical acclaim and was a box office hit, grossing over $63.1 million domestically and initially setting a record for the largest December box office opening weekend, only to be later surpassed by Scream 2. After a short-lived revival at MTV in 2011, Beavis and Butt-Head was recently confirmed to be coming back for more at Comedy Central and Paramount+ and it may not stop there.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his new animation brand Bandera, Mike Judge opened up about the upcoming Beavis and Butt-Head revival. The series creator expressed his hope for the movie and new show to expand to a larger franchise in a similar vein to Norman Lear and his acclaimed roster of sitcoms. Judge added:
“Hopefully we can get to that point.”
Though the idea of a Beavis and Butt-Head spin-off may not appeal to many, it wouldn’t be the first time the hit animated series saw an expansion outside of its titular characters. Show vets Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn partnered together in 1997 for the spin-off Daria centered on the titular recurring character and classmate of Beavis and Butt-Head as she moved away to the fictional town of Lawndale and served as a satire of high school life at the time. Daria received rave reviews in its five seasons on the air and would later lead to the upcoming spinoff Jodie, one of multiple announced spinoffs in the works from the show.
Viacom seems to be confident in Beavis and Butt-Head‘s future, having ordered a two-season revival at Comedy Central and the Paramount+ movie sequel that spinoffs do seem a strong possibility should either project prove to be a success. It also isn’t the only animated show of Judge’s to be making a comeback as the creator recently confirmed a King of the Hill revival is currently in the works at Bandera Entertainment. Audiences won’t have to wait for long for more of Judge’s beloved animated worlds as the Beavis and Butt-Head movie is set to premiere on Paramount+ sometime this year.
