Paramount+ reveals the new Beavis and Butt-Head movie details including a time jump, the film’s title and synopsis of the space-set adventure. The animated franchise first launched in 1992 with the eponymous TV series created by and starring Mike Judge as the titular teenage slackers who cause trouble in their small American Southwest town while also getting meta and critiquing various music videos and MTV shows from the comfort of their couch. Beavis and Butt-Head‘s success would see the duo head to the big screen in 1996 with the movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, which scored largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and was a box office hit for Paramount Pictures.
Beavis and Butt-Head would originally conclude its run in 1997 after seven successful seasons and after serving as a springboard for the hit spin-off series Daria. MTV would later revive the show in 2011 with a 22-episode season 8, though due to dwindling ratings as the revival went on, it would be cancelled for a second time by the network while they shopped it to other potential homes. Mid-2020 brought the announcement that a new Beavis and Butt-Head revival was in the works at Comedy Central for two seasons, spinoffs and specials as well as a new feature-length film, which audiences are now getting new details for.
As part of the ViacomCBS investor event this week, Paramount+ has revealed the details for the new Beavis and Butt-Head movie. The film is entitled Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe and will see the duo sent to a space camp, where they inadvertently jump aboard the Space Shuttle and fly through a black hole, reemerging in the modern day. “In perhaps the dumbest space movie ever made, Beavis and Butt-Head are sentenced to Space Camp by a ‘creative’ judge in 1998. Their obsession with a docking simulator (huh huh) leads to a trip on the Space Shuttle, with predictably disastrous results. After going through a black hole, they reemerge in our time, where they look for love, misuse iPhones, and are hunted by the Deep State. Spoiler: They don’t score.”
The new Beavis and Butt-Head movie title and synopsis fall well in line with the crazy hijinks the titular duo frequently find themselves in, but also marks an interesting evolution for the franchise. The 2011 Beavis and Butt-Head revival did essentially bring the duo into the modern day as they critiqued then-current shows such as Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant as well as music videos released around that time. The new Beavis and Butt-Head movie not only offers a better story reason for their existence in the modern day but also sets up a larger chaotic adventure in the same vein as Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.
One of the more interesting elements still largely unknown about Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe is how it will tie into the upcoming Paramount+ series revival. Mike Judge has shared designs of the duo as they will be aged up in the revival and would come after the premiere of the movie, though at the time of writing it has yet to be disclosed whether the black hole time jump will result in their newer appearances or if the new season will remain isolated from the film. Only time will tell when Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe hits Paramount+ in July followed by new episodes of the series shortly thereafter.
