Bayonetta 3 Update: Still Going Great Nearly 4 Years After Reveal

PlatinumGames has finally shared an update about Bayonetta 3, confirming that the eagerly anticipated title is still in the works, while additionally noting how development is “going great.” The game was initially announced three years ago during The Game Awards 2017 in a teaser trailer. However, news about the project has been sparse since then.

Earlier in the year, both Bayonetta and another Platinum classic, Vanquish, received a bit of a resurgence, thanks to the release of remasters on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Naturally, questions once again arose about the state of Bayonetta 3, with many a fan wondering whether the title had quietly been shelved. Director Hideki Kamiya quickly dispelled cancellation concerns, telling fans to “throw them out the window immediately.” Kamiya’s latest update on the matter indicates there still exists no cause for concern.

Over the weekend, Japanese publication Famitsu posted year-end interviews with a series of developers. PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya took part, once again addressing fears about Bayonetta 3’s state of development. First and foremost, he noted that while new information remains scarce, production in general is “going very well.” Kamiya additionally offered an update on the tentatively titled Project G.G., the director’s next superhero-centric game that Platinum teased earlier in the year. The update itself is rather minimal, though, with Kamiya simply saying it’s started moving forward. He told Famitsu the following (translated by Gematsu):

“First off, many people are worried about Bayonetta 3 considering there hasn’t been any new information since its announcement, but verifications of new systems have been going great and development is going very well, so please wait with peace of mind. (This is a copy of my 2020 comment.) Also Project G.G. (title tentative) has finally started moving, so please look forward to it.”

Though the small update brings no new details to the table, Kamiya’s statement should at least soothe the worries of fans who fear the worst. When the studio plans to show more presently remains unknown, but it could be a while. After all, PlatinumGames had a busy 2020, considering the release of The Wonderful 101: Remastered.

The company’s resources and efforts are additionally going towards the development of Babylon’s Fall, a Square Enix-published action game that’s also been conspicuously quiet for the last couple of years. PlatinumGames is not only busy with development duties, either. For a while, the studio and its developers spoke candidly about wanting to pursue self-publishing ventures. The Wonderful 101: Remastered marked the first of such endeavors for the Osaka, Japan-based developer. Notably, a capital investment from Chinese holdings company Tencent aided in this venture, and will undoubtedly help in others going forward.

Bayonetta 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch at an unspecified date.
