Bayonetta 3 Still Has No Release In Sight, Won’t Be Shown Until It’s Ready

Bayonetta 3 is one of those mythical gaming sequels that fans have been anticipating for quite some time, but it sounds like everyone will be waiting a bit longer. Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya spoke about the highly-anticipated action game and confirmed it’s not cancelled but it’ll be a while before fans see it.

Bayonetta 3 was announced at The Game Awards in 2017 via a teaser but has been dark ever since. Developer Platinum Games hasn’t offered any updates and with the release of several other games since then, many wondered if the game was cancelled entirely. It doesn’t seem like that’s the case though, it’s just taking a really, really long time.

In an interview with VideoGamesChronicle, Kamiya spoke about the game and teased that Bayonetta 3 news could happen as soon as this year. It’s not “It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something come out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying.”

Kamiya went on to say that that fans should just forget about Bayonetta 3 right now so that they can be surprised when an update. “I understand it’s driving the fans crazy! In light of that, my suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3. Then when something finally does happen, it will be a nice surprise, won’t it?”

Hopefully, this all means that there will be new Bayonetta 3 information during a Nintendo Direct or some other big event later this year. Depending on how far along the game is, the game could release in 2022 and maybe even take advantage of the rumored upgraded Nintendo Switch. As of right now, fans should probably just erase the game from their memory until the game re-emerges as Kamiya suggests.

Following the Cyberpunk 2077 controversy, it’s probably a good thing PlatinumGames are holding off on showcasing Bayonetta 3. It’s entirely possible that Bayonetta 3 went through some sort of reboot during development, holding up any sort of news or reveals. Unless Platinum Games is doing something super dramatic and ambitious with the game, it seems unlikely it would take this long if everything was going smoothly. Kamiya stated at the end of 2020 that development on the game is going well but it’s possible that wasn’t the case the entire time. PlatinumGames has also been quite busy with a variety of other games such as The Wonderful 101 on Nintendo Switch and Astral Chain.

Bayonetta 3 will release exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
