Battlefield Twitter Account Briefly Disappears Hinting At Imminent Reveal

The official Twitter account for EA’s Battlefield series briefly disappeared from the social media site amid rumors that the publisher is about to make a big announcement about the franchise. Battlefield is EA’s premiere first-person shooter series and has been a hugely popular series since its launch in 2002 in the form of Battlefield 1942. The last entry came in 2018 with Battlefield V, which received widespread positive reviews from critics.

The fact that EA is working on a new Battlefield game has been known for some time. In fact, the Official PlayStation Magazine confirmed that Battlefield 6 was in development in May this year, with developer DICE once again at the helm. According to a variety of sources, the game will release at some point in 2021 for current and next-gen consoles. Meanwhile, insider Tom Henderson claims that the sequel will be set during the present day, bringing the gameplay back to a modern setting. This comes after the last few entries in the series have been set both the first and second World Wars.

Rumors are beginning to circulate on the web that a big announcement could be imminent after EA took down the official Battlefield Twitter account. First noticed by industry insider Nibel, the official handle for the shooter series was completely removed for a spell, with Twitter saying that the account “no longer exists.” This could suggest that the publisher is preparing to make a reveal and is preparing the account to promote a new game. However, other social media accounts relating to the franchise were unaffected, with the Battlefield Facebook page still active at the time of writing. Screen Rant has reached out to EA for comment and will update this article with any response.

Battlefield developer DICE ended ongoing support for both Battlefield V and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 earlier this year. This had already led to speculation that the studio was now focusing its efforts on the next installment in the famous first-person shooter franchise. The last DLC for Battlefront 2 released on April 29, meaning that DICE will have been able to completely focus on Battlefield 6 for at least the last few months. Of course, it’s likely that the developer has been working on the game for much longer than that.

Completely removing the Battlefield Twitter account is a strange move for EA. Exactly what it means is not clear, especially when other social media accounts associated with the series are still online. While it is likely that the publisher has removed the page while it prepares for a new announcement, it could also be a mistake or technical issue. A reveal seems more likely, though, as it would coincide with the recent news about the launch of next-gen consoles such as the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
