As E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) gets underway this week in Los Angeles, a number of upcoming video games have already been revealed during today’s press conference. The talk of the town right now is Titanfall 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Star Wars, which were all revealed in new trailers. But yet another game not to be missed is Battlefield 1, the fourteenth installment in the Battlefield franchise.
Set during World War I (which few historical games have focused on), Battlefield 1 will follow its predecessors by placing the player into one of the world’s most brutal and deadly combat zones. The first trailer released back in May passed 1.75 million likes on YouTube, making it the most liked movie, TV or video game trailer of all time. And we can probably expect the new trailer released today to do the same.
Backed by Wiz Khalifa’s song ‘No Limit (Sencit Remix),’ the new trailer showcases a few of the game’s many different locations of gameplay. Across fields and deserts, in forests, towns and even the skies, up to 64-players will engage in some of the largest multiplayer battles in first person shooter history. Multiplayer maps are to be based on locations around the world, including Arabia, the Western Front, and the Alps.
Gameplay will also be a bit more varied than what many are used to seeing. Players can make use of World War I weapons like bolt-action rifles, automatic, and semi-automatic rifles, artillery, flamethrowers, and mustard gas to kill opponents from afar. As for melee combat, video game developer EA DICE is introducing sabres, trench clubs, and shovels into the action. Plus, players will also be able to take control of tanks, armored trucks, biplane aircraft, and battleships, as well as ride horses into battle.
The visuals are stunning, too, in what is reported to be in-game footage. Environmental destruction (allowing the player to break down cover, fell trees, and destroy buildings) promises to happen more intuitively this time around. According to EA DICE, players will be able to “carve a path through walls and buildings, take down your enemies in creative ways, and leave your mark on the terrain around you through intuitive destruction.” And another change to gameplay will be dynamic weather, which means players will have to adapt to changes in sun, rain, and fog to “ensure that no battle is ever the same.”
Battlefield 1 releases October 21, 2016 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It will also be available to play during EA Play in mid-June.
