Batman’s Son Gets a New Codename, Fulfilling Bruce’s Dream for Gotham

Warning! Contains spoilers for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #8!The universe of DCeased is perhaps the absolute darkest reality DC has ever shown, but in spite of all of this trauma, the original Batman‘s son Damian Wayne still manages to fulfill his father’s brightest dreams by getting a new code name and making the ultimate sacrifice.

In DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #8 by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Lucas Meyer, and Andy Lanning, readers finally see exactly how the heroes are going to take down Erebus, and it involves a heartbreaking sacrifice. Erebus has been using a corrupted form of the Anti-Life Equation to infect everyone in the DC Universe, but Damian Wayne figures out that using the Life Equation could stop it. By learning the Life Equation from Cyborg, Damian is able to cause a Big Bang reaction inside of Erebus. This destroys the elder god from the inside out, and creates a new universe in the process. Right before Damian does this, he’s gifted a new white suit and a new codename, the Light Knight by Jon Kent. This new codename and the sacrifice that Damian makes, not only saves the universe, but also fulfills Batman’s original wish for Gotham City.

Damian Wayne Becomes The Light Knight

Batman’s Son Gets a New Codename, Fulfilling Bruce’s Dream for Gotham

Batman has tried for decades to rid Gotham City of darkness and to give its citizens hope. As the fifth Robin, Damian Wayne has helped his father in this quest. While there’s no doubt that Damian has rejected some rules that Batman holds dear, he is still a hero. This is every bit as true in the DCeased universe. Despite Damian losing just about his entire family and his entire planet, he still manages to think up a solution that not only saves everyone but does so in a way that would make Bruce proud. Damian Wayne manages to become a brighter version of the Dark Knight, taking on the code name the Light Knight. In doing so, he is able to defeat the literal personification of darkness and make one of Batman’s biggest dreams a reality.

Alfred Imagined A Brighter Future For Batman

Batman Is The Bright Knight

During the Joker War story arc, it was revealed Alfred had commissioned a bright suit for Batman, one he could wear in the daylight while giving hope to his citizens, as opposed to sneaking around in the dark. Alfred knew that this was ultimately Bruce’s biggest wish for Gotham City, for everyone to live in a safe and bright city. While Batman still hasn’t been able to achieve this, in DCeased Damian does on a scale Bruce could never imagine. Damian Wayne’s final gift to his father’s memory is eradicating darkness, not just as Batman, but as the Light Knight. This is incredibly close to the Bright Knight suit Alfred made for Bruce.

While Damian’s sacrifice is heartbreaking, it’s undeniable that there is nothing else he could have done to make his father more proud. Damian Wayne saves everyone in the universe, and he does so in such a way that brings light to everyone’s lives, ultimately saving them from the darkness Batman fought so hard against.
