Batman v Superman’s Lex Luthor Providing Free WiFi for #NYCC

New York Comic-Con 2015 is about to kick off (at the time of writing this), and while fans are eager to see all kinds of geeky goodness (from comic books, video games TV, movies and board games they love), as always, there are a couple of upcoming movie events that those at the convention will be buzzing about.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be one of the biggest movie events to happen in 2016 – and while the film won’t be showing up at #NYCC ’15 (that we know of), Warner Bros. has found a way to make sure that fans will feel the presence of the DC Extended Universe movies, in a way that fans will not only remember, but probably appreciate.

New York Comic-Con has confirmed via its official faq sheet that Warner Bros. will kick off a viral marketing campaign for the convention, based around Batman v Superman: LexCorp Industries and its whiz-kid CEO Lex Luthor (Jeesse Eisenberg) will be providing free wifi for NYCC attendees:

Yes. Free WiFi throughout the Javits Center will be provided by LexCorp Industries.

LexCorp unites humanity through technology. We believe in technology as a means of communication, unification and a source of inspiration. To access the WiFi on-site at the Javits Center, connect to the “LexCorp” network from the list of available networks. You will automatically be redirected to the LexCorp WiFi login page where you can enter your email address and click “CONNECT” to gain access to the network. LexCorp – together, we can build a better world.

Batman v Superman’s Lex Luthor Providing Free WiFi for #NYCC

Having attended NYCC as a press reporter for half a decade (or more), there are a couple of questions I have regarding Lex Luthor’s seemingly philanthropic offer:

  • Is this “free WiFi” the sort of standard free WiFi that the Javits Center provides? Because if so, it’s not much of a service.
  • Even if this is some kind of upgraded service providing free WiFi, is there enough bandwidth to support the sheer numbers of NYCC attendees that will be using it? San Diego Comic Con goers know just how fast WiFi gets drained dry during a convention.

Both SDCC and NYCC continue to try an update the format of their respective conventions for a new digital age. In addition to providing (what are now standard) amenities like free WiFi, both conventions are turning more and more toward streaming their respective panels online, so that the experience of the convention extends beyond the site itself to include interested fans all over the world. Of course, special material like new TV or movie footage is reserved for those physically at the convention.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’ most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
