Telltale Games has made a name for itself by producing story-centric adventure games based on popular franchises, including both The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Batman is a franchise that has lent itself to some popular and highly-regarded games with Rocksteady Studios’ recent Arkham series, which started with Batman: Arkham Asylum and concluded with Batman: Arkham Knight. It’s no surprise, then, that expectations have been high since Telltale announced its own Batman game in December of last year during The Game Awards 2015.
More details were announced at this year’s SXSW, and among the details included in Telltale’s accompanying blog post were that the game’s story would be a “fresh interpretation” (not tied to any existing movies or TV series) and that players would take control of Bruce Wayne during the day and Batman at night. What was missing from the blog post was an actual look at the visuals of the game. Now, however, that has been remedied by a new batch of screenshots directly from Telltale.
Telltale has released a logo and four new images from its Batman game, with one featuring Batman and Catwoman, one giving a glimpse of the Batmobile sitting stationary in the Batcave, and two of Bruce Wayne out of costume. With the images comes an announcement of the voice actors for the game’s major characters:
“Rendered to look like a living, breathing comic book, Telltale’s vision of Batman will feature an award-winning cast of talent, including Troy Baker in the role of Bruce Wayne, Travis Willingham as Harvey Dent, Erin Yvette as Vicki Vale, Enn Reitel as Alfred Pennyworth, Murphy Guyer as Lieutenant James Gordon, Richard McGonagle as Carmine Falcone, and Laura Bailey as Selina Kyle. Additional cast and characters will be revealed as the season progresses.”
Among the other details included in Telltale’s press release are that the game will be shown to attendants of the upcoming E3 Gaming Expo in Los Angeles, and that the series will be released both in downloadable episodes and as a special “Season Pass Disc” which will be sold at retailers in North America, Latin America, and Europe. No doubt the release of the new images ahead of E3 is meant to drum up interest for the game ahead of the expo and convince attendants to stop by Telltale’s booth to give it a look. The timing of the expo is just right as well, given that Telltale will start releasing episodes of the game this summer.
Telltale Games has earned a solid reputation based on their ability to create engaging new stories based on existing franchises, and they may be poised to do so again with Batman. With the recent theatrical release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the ongoing DC Rebirth comics giving the character added publicity, Telltale is poised to capitalize on renewed interest in the Caped Crusader by filling the void left by the Arkham games.
