Batman & Spider-Man Clash in Genius Fanart Combining Their First Comic Covers

Batman & Spider-Man Clash in Genius Fanart Combining Their First Comic Covers

The first appearances of Batman and Spider-Man have easily recognizable comic art thanks to the legacies of the titular characters. Now, a work of fan art has combined the two brilliantly. Merging Detective Comics #27 and Amazing Fantasy #15 is surprisingly humorous, becoming funnier as each detail is noticed.

On Instagram, Kerry Callen – an illustrator – shared a parody sketch modeled after both Detective Comics #27 and Amazing Fantasy #15. It combines the art from both, modeling the work of Bob Kane, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. The merger of DC and Marvel Comics shows the two heroes swinging into action.

However, the two have managed to swing into one another, making for a humorous, vintage-inspired run-in. It isn’t unheard of for DC and Marvel’s heroes to meet considering the brief Amalgam Comics crossover from 1996. Nonetheless, it doesn’t happen often, making this a perfect mix of humor and homage.

Venom has taken various forms over the years thanks to his shapeshifting abilities, but one fan art shows a redesign even too daring for Marvel.

Batman & Spider-Man Meet in Vintage Homage

In the parody art, Batman’s zip line and Spider-Man’s web have become entangled, causing them to have a run-in within the city. Neither is seen holding the criminals they had caught as shown in the original art. Instead, feet can be seen on the bottom corners of the page, indicating that both heroes have lost hold of their unwilling passengers. Also of note is the exchange the two have, with Batman calling Spider-Man a “newbie.” This is a perfect, humorous reaction since the Dark Knight debuted in 1939, twenty-three years before Marvel’s wall-crawler would enter the superhero scene.

This new twist on the iconic comic covers channels the best of the vintage look for both heroes. Batman is wearing his old-school gloves, while Spider-man’s web is enhanced through the emphasis on its texture and thickness. Although the friendly neighborhood hero doesn’t appear to have his web “wing” gliders under his arms here, the vibrancy of his suit is amazing. The only thing better would have been if Spider-Man had tossed a quip back at Batman since he is known for punning and exchanging retorts with his foes and allies.

Batman & Spider-Man Have Major Crossover Potential

DC’s Dark Knight and Marvel’s webslinger both share a loss of parents, a strong sense of justice, and the ability to save their homes. They may have very different personalities, but the two have plenty of potential for a great team-up. Spider-Man uses a very gymnastic style of fighting his foes thanks to his agile movements and speed, making him a bit similar to Dick Grayson’s Robin. These heroes aren’t a natural pair, but they could pull off a hero/sidekick dynamic. Though it’s not likely to happen anytime soon, this crossover from Kerry Callen is a perfect homage and humorous gag for Batman and Spider-Man.
