Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman: The Brave and the Bold #9!If it weren’t for one Batman ally, the Dark Knight would have died a long time ago. Bruce Wayne’s costumed alter ego is famous for his numerous toys and gadgets that help him fight crime. But one creation from an outside source helped him take his crime-fighting to the next level and keep Batman safe.

In Batman: The Brave and the Bold #9‘s story “Nor is the Batman” by Bruno Redondo, the Caped Crusader’s early days are shown and Batman investigates a case that leads him into a confrontation with the Joker. During their fight, Batman and the Joker fall from a building, resulting in Bruce getting dozens of broken bones.

Fortunately, Batman’s confidante Lucius Fox brings Bruce something a bit more reliable than a rope and hook to help him when traveling rooftops. Despite Bruce’s aversion to firearms, Lucius gives Batman a grappling gun to prevent any more dangerous falls in the future.

It goes without saying that the work Batman does is risky. Night after night, Bruce Wayne goes out into one of the most crime-ridden cities in the DC Universe and faces the worst criminal elements around. It’d be bad enough if he was facing gangsters or average street criminals, but Gotham City is also plagued with some of the most insidious and terrifying villains around. Of course, Batman is one of the most highly trained heroes in the world, but above all else, Batman is a mortal man, and he could easily be felled like anyone else.

Batman has come up with dozens, if not hundreds of amazing gadgets to help him out in the field. His utility belt is stocked with batarangs and other devices to ensure he can take down villains and stay safe. But the one thing that’s arguably helped him out more than anything else wasn’t something that Batman even created. It was Lucius’ genius that made it so Bruce would have something at the ready in case he slipped and fell off a building. This gift is an important reminder that Batman’s crusade has always succeeded thanks to the contributions of others.

Batman’s Greatest Asset Has Always Been His Allies

Many fans might like to think about Batman’s mission as one man against the world. But even in the days before Robin or Batgirl, Bruce was kept alive thanks to assistance from people like Alfred or Lucius. Sure, they were there with Batman in the field, but they were there for him providing him the things he needed: medical assistance, outside-the-box thinking, and even gadgets. Could Bruce have gotten along just fine without the grappling gun? It’s possible. But thanks to Lucius Fox, Batman had everything he needed in his earliest days to ensure he’d be protecting Gotham for years.
