Batman Origin Rewrite Gives Him a New Link to an Iconic Movie Villain

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for DC’s Spring Breakout #1!A new origin rewrite has officially connected Batman to one of his most iconic villains. Now, a new origin reveal has shown that one has had a secret connection with the hero, and it’s undeniably one of his most formidable foes.

In DC’s Spring Breakout #1, the story “Cold Feet” by Thomas Krajewski and Wes St. Claire features a story that looks back at Bruce’s past not too long after losing his parents. He has completely lost the motivation to do anything due to his grief. However, a woman offers to be his dancing partner in a beautiful moment that breaks the darkness of his depression for a few brief moments. However, when she announces that her fiancé has arrived, it’s revealed that she’s none other than Nora Fries, Mr. Freeze’s future wife.

She’s the Heart of Mr. Freeze’s Tragic Story

What’s amazing about this reveal is how it ultimately enlightens fans as to why Nora Fries is such an interesting character, even if she’s been frozen for a majority of her appearances. Her history has been tied to Mr. Freeze’s dedication to finding a cure for her illness so that he won’t be without her. This shows how much he cares for her and will do anything to ensure she can grow old with him, even if he needs to resort to crime. However, a glimpse into the past further elaborates just why Nora and Freeze work as a fascinating pair.

For the brief period she’s with young Bruce Wayne, fans get a glimpse of the kind-hearted woman that Mr. Freeze loves. She’s patient with Bruce, understanding his pain while trying to give him an experience that could help him process his grief. Most of what fans knew about Nora Fries before this story primarily came from Freeze’s descriptions of her. Now, they get to see who she is for themselves, and she lives up to everything that has made Freeze a wonderfully written antagonist.

Mr. Freeze’s History with Batman Improves Upon Another Origin Reveal from the Movies

Batman (Michael Keaton) holding The Joker (Jack Nicholson) by the collar in Tim Burton's Batman

Of course, this isn’t the first time that one of Batman’s rogues’ gallery has been connected to his past. One of the most controversial twists in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film featured a reveal where the Joker was the true killer of Bruce’s parents. This has become a hot-button topic among fans because of how convenient it was that Batman’s greatest rival was the cause of his pain to begin with. However, Mr. Freeze’s connection to Batman’s past is a vast improvement because it plays a small but important part in his life.

Nora and Mr. Freeze aren’t the fulcrum of Batman’s existence like the Joker was in the Burtonverse, but they still played a vital part in helping him with his grief. A simple dance between Bruce and Nora, as well as a friendly handshake between him and Freeze show the humanity of their characters before the latter turned to crime to save his wife. Mr. Freeze might have been maligned by fans when he was brought to the big-screen in Batman & Robin, but his connection to Batman has given the hero’s origin a perfect rewrite that lifts both characters up in interesting new ways.
