Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny continued a franchise tradition when it introduced Toby Jones’ Basil Shaw. Dial Of Destiny Kept Indiana Jones’ Sidekick Trend Alive
There are certain tropes featured in each entry, from a new magical MacGuffin Indiana needs to recover (The Holy Grail, the Archimedes’ Dial, etc), a spectacular opening setpiece or a new sidekick for Indiana Jones himself. In Dial of Destiny’s case, the opening introduced Indiana’s latest sidekick Basil Shaw, a British archeologist who audiences meet as he’s being kidnapped by Nazis and taken on a train filled with stolen antiques. Basil joins a long line of sidekicks that dates back to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The most iconic is, of course, Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood, a former flame who would become Indiana’s wife by the end of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The titular adventurer found himself with two sidekicks in 1984’s Temple of Doom; Kate Capshaw’s Willie and Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round. Indy’s own father Henry Jones, Sr. (Sean Connery) filled the required sidekick role in The Last Crusade, while Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt provided able support in 2008’s The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
How Helena Shaw Takes Over Her Father’s Sidekick Role In Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny
In what might be the movie making a meta gag about history repeating itself, Basil Shaw’s daughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) later fills in her father’s sidekick role. Helena (AKA “Wombat“) is also Indiana’s goddaughter, though the two became estranged following her father’s passing. Their hunt for the Archimedes’ Dial is essentially a sequel to the mission Henry and Indiana undertook 25 years previously. While the pair are initially at odds, they unite when they realize the stakes involved.
The relationship between Helena and Indy helps the latter come to terms with his past too, including the death of his son Mutt in Vietnam and reuniting with Marion. One of the strengths of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is that it feels like the main character – and the movie itself – is reflecting on his own legacy. It’s rare for a series to follow the same actor playing the same character for four decades and ending when he retires, with Basil and Helena representing parts of his past and future.
