Barbie Almost Had An Even Funnier Beach Scene Than John Cena’s (& It Needs To Make The Blooper Reel)

Barbie Almost Had An Even Funnier Beach Scene Than John Cena’s (& It Needs To Make The Blooper Reel)

Although Barbie was bursting with hilarious and iconic jokes, including John Cena’s amazing mermaid cameo, it turns out that there was one particular deleted scene in Barbie that would have been even better than the rest, and as a result, must appear in the blooper reel. In July 2023, Barbie first took the world by storm. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Barbie follows the titular character, Barbie, as she discovers that her life in Barbieland may not be as perfect as she always thought, and furthermore, that life outside of her world is even worse. From there, the film sees Barbie taking control of her life.

Despite having a somewhat serious and moving storyline, Barbie is more of a comedy than a drama, at least at the start. One such example of this is an early cameo from wrestler-turned-actor John Cena, who appears to be Kenmaid, a mermaid version of Ken. Seeing the big and buff Cena dressed up like a mermaid, waving along with the other Kens, is an unexpected but hilarious moment in the movie. It is definitely a standout among the rest of Barbie’s somewhat absurd and out-of-this-world humor. However, there is one deleted scene from Barbie that definitely could have given John Cena a run for his money.

The Barbie Movie Cut A Jaws Parody Featuring Michael Cera’s Allan

According to an interview done with Barbie’s cinematographer, Rodrigo Prieto, via Variety, there was one funny scene that was cut from the movie featuring Michael Cera’s iconic character, Allan. In Barbie, Allan is the one male character inhabiting Barbieland that is different from the rest. Rather than being like every other Ken in Barbie, he is just Allan, Ken’s best friend. However, it is clear that Allan does not necessarily fit in with the Kens, and more than that, has an awkward yet pleasant sense of humor that is perfect for Michael Cera. This makes it all the more hilarious when Barbie put him in a scene reminiscent of Stephen Spielberg’s Jaws.

Apparently, during the early scene in which Ryan Gosling’s Beach Ken attempts to impress Barbie by surfing, there was supposed to be another part wherein a Barbieland police officer notices someone getting eaten by a shark in the ocean. Upon closer inspection, it would have revealed a close-up shot of Allan’s horrified face, mimicking a scene from the iconic horror movie, Jaws. It is no surprise that Greta Gerwig would have written this scene, especially since Barbie is full of pop culture references, including Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Barbie’s Deleted Jaws Spoof Sounds Even Funnier Than John Cena’s Cameo

As much as John Cena’s Barbie cameo was great, Michael Cera’s Jaws scene likely would have been even funnier. While Cena’s cameo relies on the element of surprise, Cera’s scene seems like it would have been pure acting gold, delivered with whatever horrified face Cera decided to make. In this way, Allan’s Jaws scene likely would have had a lot more staying power than Cena’s Kenmaid cameo. While seeing John Cena in Barbie is hilarious the first time around, Michael Cera’s being-eaten-by-a-shark face could continue to make people laugh over and over again.

Something that further supports the hilarity of Michael Cera’s deleted scene is the fact that, after filming it, it is reported that Greta Gerwig found it so funny that she asked the crew to keep replaying it over and over again. Clearly, if the director is so taken with a scene that she herself wrote and directed, that means that it was probably especially hilarious. Plus, considering Michael Cera’s long resume of iconic comedy performances, it is not surprising that he would totally nail the scene. While this doesn’t negate how great John Cena’s cameo is, it certainly proves that audiences were missing out when this Allan scene was deleted.

Allan’s Hilarious Beach Moment Needs To Make The Barbie Blooper Reel

Since audiences were deprived of Michael Cera’s Jaws scene when watching the final version of Barbie, the only solution is to include the deleted scene in Barbie’s blooper reel. While some Barbie bloopers have already been released, there is always an audience for bloopers, and if Barbie decides to share even more of their behind-the-scenes funny moments, then this deleted scene must make the cut. Considering how funny Gerwig found it, it is sure to be a huge hit with audiences, even if it didn’t make the final cut. All in all, viewers need to see Michael Cera’s Jaws scene, no matter what.
