The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has passed a major box office milestone despite significantly dropping down the domestic chart. The movie is a prequel set in the universe of The Hunger Games, following future Panem president Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) as he mentors Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a District 12 tribute in the 10th Annual Hunger Games. The movie opened the weekend before Thanksgiving, and despite earning the lowest opening weekend of the entire franchise, has stayed in the Top 2 for five weeks, longer than any previous installment.
Per Deadline, the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes box office is projected to add a domestic 3-day total of $4.5 million and a 4-day total of $5.4 million over the Christmas weekend. This has allowed it to reach a cumulative gross of $154.8 million, crossing the $150 million milestone. While this is an important achievement that only 16 other movies have accomplished so far this year, the movie was also crowded out by new holiday releases and fell drastically down the chart, from No. 2 to No. 7.
More to come…
