Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Make Custom Party Members

<

It is possible to build a custom four-person party in Baldur’s Gate 3. This allows access to classes and backgrounds beyond what the main companions start as. In a sense, it offers more dialogue options and some unique interaction outcomes.

However, playing as a custom party does have drawbacks. None of the voiced origin characters will be in the party, making it more likely to miss triggers for their related quests, romances, and endings. As of patch 2, there is a workaround to temporally dismiss these extra characters and bring in companions as needed.

Creating Multiple Tavs

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Make Custom Party Members

When starting a new story, you can manipulate the player settings to allow the creation of additional main characters. Unfortunately, there is no feature to add in custom characters to an existing campaign. The only option for those saves is to use hirelings – like Zenith and Kerz – who are already named and have premade biographies of their own.

Making a second main character is as simple as starting Baldur’s Gate 3 in two-player split-screen mode. This requires two controllers, even if playing the PC version. The additional “players” can join a session as guests instead of using unique Steam IDs or PlayStation Network profiles. Upon start-up, a second copy of the main character, Tav, can be created. Take note that this custom character cannot be saved for future editing and must be finalized now.

Making the third and fourth custom characters is a bit trickier. It requires starting up a second instance of Baldur’s Gate 3 and creating an online lobby. On PC, this is as simple as opening the game twice on a single machine and hosting a multiplayer session.

For PlayStation 5, one will need to have a second console and use Share Play. Once all four members have joined the lobby, all custom characters can be created.

Custom Character Limitations

Withers, an aptly withered skeleton, stands in a grassy clearing in a screenshot from Baldur's Gate 3.

The NPC Withers can respec characters for a low fee of 100 gold. However, this only allows changing classes and ability scores. He cannot alter anyone’s race, background, gender, appearance, or voice. This holds true for the two to four versions of Tav you have just made, making it extra important to double-check that you are satisfied with all of their selections.

Party Switching

During Baldur’s Gate 3’s initial release, this custom party would be permanently allocated to the active team. Unless using a mod, it would be impossible to change to one of the companions. But, updates have now included Wither’s Wardrobe of Wayward Friends.

Directly talk to one of the custom party members and there will be an option to dismiss their avatar from the party. In camp, they will now be stored inside the wardrobe; if no one is currently stored, the furnishing will go poof in a cloud of smoke.
