Back To The Future and Transformers Get Their Own Comics Crossover

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Transformers/Back to the Future #1

It’s actually happening. Marty Mcfly and Doc Brown are rolling out with the Autobots in an all-new Transformers comics series from IDW Publishing. The first issue has just been released, setting up a wild and entertaining story ahead for both Transformers and Back to the Future fans alike. The best part? The time-traveling DeLorean has somehow been turned into a Transformer!

This amazing concept for a miniseries comes from writer Cavan Scott with art by Juan Samu. Scott has previously written Star Wars Adventures for IDW, but he’s also slated to be writing an ongoing comic series for Marvel Comics based on the new Star Wars era known as The High Republic. This new crossover event is coming right after the recently concluded Transformers vs. The Terminator event, so it looks like the crossovers with the robots in disguise are just going to keep on coming from IDW. Transformers/Back To The Future will run for four issues in October, featuring Marty and Doc unwittingly getting themselves caught in the middle of the Autobots waging their war to destroy and end the evil forces of the Deceptions.

Transformers/Back To The Future #1 does a great job of setting up the stakes of the event, beginning with Decepticons Ravage and Rumble running surveillance for their lord Megatron, looking to see if the humans have any resources they can exploit to get an advantage on Optimus Prime and the Autobots. As it happens, the two evil robots discover Marty traveling through time in Doc Brown’s Delorean, and subsequently returning soon after at the Twin Pines/Lone Pine Mall at the end of the first film. Deducing that the pitiful humans actually found a means for time travel, Megatron must have the time machine. However, that’s not going to be so easy as Bumblebee arrives on the scene, stopping the Decepticons from getting to Doc Brown before he travels to the future, which the Autobot sees and subsequently reports to his commander Optimus.

After this, Marty Mcfly goes to bed. However, Marty does not wake up to find that his life has improved before Doc Brown returns in the DeLorean to get Marty to go save Marty’s future children. Instead, Marty discovers that his entire present has changed, and his family is being transported as slaves to work in a camp run by Biff, who’s working for the Decepticons who have taken over the world. Something in the timeline has drastically changed, but before Marty can even react, Megatron’s second in command Starscream is after him for insubordination. Thankfully, the Delorean swoops in to save the day, but Marty is shocked to find that the Delorean has become a transformer as well! The time-traveling robot tells Marty to come with him so that they can save the future at the issue’s end.

Again, Transformers/Back To The Future #1 is a super great opening chapter, setting the stage and creating a ton of questions to get fans to grab the next issue and find out what happens next. How did the Decepticons take over the world? How did the Delorean become a sentient Transformer? Where’s the Doc? Fans will have to wait until the next issue comes out later this month. While they wait, fans can also can pre-order Gigawatt, the DeLorean Transformer in collectible toy form from Hasbro that was released alongside the series, though it won’t come out until the beginning of next year.
