Ayo Edebiri’s New Comedy Gives Her A Rare Rotten Tomatoes Record For 2023

Ayo Edebiri’s New Comedy Gives Her A Rare Rotten Tomatoes Record For 2023

Ayo Edebiri’s highly anticipated comedy movie, Bottoms, continues the actor’s terrific 2023 streak with even more critical acclaim – and a rare Rotten Tomatoes record. Bottoms stars Edebiri and Rachel Sennott as a pair of unpopular high schoolers who start a fight club as a way of meeting girls and losing their virginity. Bottoms has received the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any major release in 2023, currently certified fresh with a near-perfect 98% approval rating. And this is far from a fluke for Edebiri’s career; she’s enjoyed plenty of similar acclaim throughout 2023.

2023 has been a year of disappointments in terms of critical reception to movies and TV shows. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Meg 2: The Trench have all been met with “rotten” scores on Rotten Tomatoes. But Edebiri has starred in three 2023 movies in a row that were certified “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Taking her acclaimed TV appearances into account, she’s been in five well-received projects back-to-back, which is practically unheard of in the current media landscape.

Ayo Edebiri’s Last 3 Movies Are Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes

Bottoms’ 98% Rotten Tomatoes score makes it Edebiri’s highest-rated film of the year (and the highest-rated major movie release of the year, period), but her last two movies were certified “fresh,” too. Theater Camp, a wacky ensemble comedy about the staff of an upstate New York theater camp, in which Edebiri plays Janet Walch, received an 85% rating. The Sweet East, a drama about a high school senior who discovers the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C., in which Edebiri plays Molly, received a 91% rating.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Edebiri has also lent her voice to a pair of universally acclaimed animated movies this year. She made a cameo appearance as Gwen Stacy’s bandmate Glory Grant in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was praised as a worthy successor to its instant classic predecessor. She also played the larger role of April O’Neil, the first human ally of the Ninja Turtles, in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which was similarly praised for its emotionally engaging storyline and eye-popping visual style.

Bottoms’ widespread critical acclaim doesn’t just make it Edebiri’s third well-received movie of 2023; it’s her fifth well-received 2023 project overall. Edebiri has risen to fame with her breakout role as gifted but inexperienced chef Sydney Adamu in The Bear, one of the most highly acclaimed shows on the air, and she was also praised for her guest role as Janine Teagues’ sister Ayesha in Abbott Elementary season 2. Bottoms proves once again that Edebiri is one of the greatest up-and-coming actors out there and an A-list star in the making.
