Avengers Writer Confirms Limit on Scarlet Witch’s Powers

It’s no secret that Scarlet Witch is one of the Avengers’ most powerful team members. Her chaos magic is so strong that it can even go as far as warping reality itself if Wanda wills it. As powerful as she is though, Marvel writer Jim Zub confirms there is a limit to her incredible powers.

Avengers: No Road Home was a miniseries by the massive creative team of Zub, Mark Waid, Al Ewing, Paco Medina, Sean Izaakse, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega, Jay David Ramos, Carlos Barberi, Juan Vlasco, Jesus Aburtov and Cory Petit. The story involved a team of Avengers fighting against the Greek Goddess Nyx as she threatened to cover the universe in eternal darkness. During the series, the House of Ideas was introduced as the dwelling of the One-Above-All (Marvel’s equivalent of God) and the core of all existence.

Recently, Zub was asked via Twitter how Scarlet Witch could possibly be connected to the House of Ideas. Zub responded in kind by confirming that the Scarlet Witch doesn’t have any connection to the House of Ideas as far as canon goes. The idea that she would be connected comes from notes of a retreat Marvel held for the creative staff of the Avengers comics. The note, published as back matter for Avengers: No Road Home details story beats for the series and includes a line that says “Scarlet Witch is the only mortal connected to the House of Ideas.” Zub then clarified in the tweet that the idea was considered but ultimately dropped before the story hit publication.

The exchange shows how not every idea brought up and written into the meeting notes of the Marvel Bullpen is going to make it to the actual pages when published. Zub would also further claimed that it is possible that Wanda’s chaos magic could eventually be connected officially to the House of Ideas in a future story but that, until such a plot beat occurs in an official story published by Marvel, the idea isn’t canonical. The writer would also note that he tends to avoid talking too much about story ideas that weren’t used because it distracts from the team’s actual work and the idea might eventually be used in a future story.

Nevertheless, until Marvel decides that Wanda is indeed connected to the House of Ideas, her relation to the One-Above-All is apocryphal at best. It remains to be seen if future Avengers writers wish to follow the road previously untraveled. After all, it’s not as if Scarlet Witch isn’t already one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes in its entire universe.
