Avengers Reveals Official Origin of New Hawkeye (& Shock Tie to a Deadly MCU Villain)

Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers: Twilight #2The dystopian world of Avengers: Twilight is gaining a new hero in the form of Marvel’s newest Hawkeye, and just like Earth-616 Clint Barton, this universe’s Hawkeye is debuting as a villain. Avengers: Twilight #2 sees a brand-new Bullseye debuting as a villainous member of America’s Thunderbolts hit squad, but the young sharpshooter seems to be swayed by Captain America’s envigorating speech, and covers for future issues hints that Bullseye will become this world’s Hawkeye.

The world of Avengers: Twilight sees an aged and depowered Steve Rogers brought back into the fold of heroism by Luke Cage and a rebellious new Defenders, who will stop at nothing to defeat Tony Stark’s egotistical son James and Jarvis’ “brother.”

Avengers Reveals Official Origin of New Hawkeye (& Shock Tie to a Deadly MCU Villain)

In Avengers: Twilight #2, from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Daniel Acuña, Ramona – Marvel’s new Bullseye and hopefully their newest Hawkeye – debuts as a highly-skilled mercenary working as part of the army’s Thunderbolts division, sent into New York City by James and Jarvis to take down Captain America.

Bullseye Is Destined To Become The Avengers’ Newest Hawkeye

Little is known about Ramona, except that in her debut as Bullseye, she seems to believe that taking down Steve Rogers to “defend America” makes her and the Thunderbolts heroes, and him a villain. The world of Avengers: Twilight saw most of Marvel’s heroes murdered in a coordinated assault by Ultron, dubbed “H-Day,” so Ramona has not had many heroic role models throughout her life. The Thunderbolts are an intimidating group of trained fighters and assassins, so much so that the President of the United States was terrified to unleash them on domestic soil for the first time.

Clint Barton famously began his career with the Avengers as one of their enemies, before Jarvis brought him to Avengers Mansion to help convince Iron Man and Captain America that he was serious about becoming a hero. In Avengers: Twilight #2 Ramona has a perfect shot to assassinate Steve and doesn’t take it, after hearing his inspiring words, proving that she is less certain of the Thunderbolts’ heroism than she says. Covers from Avengers: Twilight #5 show a woman in a blended Hawkeye/Bullseye costume, hinting that Ramona will be abandoning the Thunderbolts and joining Steve, Luke Cage, and Ms. Marvel in their battle against tyranny.

Ramona Could Be Related To The Original BullseyeBullseye in full costume in Marvel Comics

The original Bullseye is a supervillain known for his rivalry with Daredevil, gifted with a brutally uncanny level of marksmanship that allows him to make nearly any object into a murderous weapon. A true psychopath, Bullseye is a perpetual villain and has been a member of both the Thunderbolts and the Dark Avengers. Seeing as Tony Stark’s son James is a major part of Twilight, it wouldn’t be shocking if Ramona was Bullseye’s biological daughter, trained by the skilled assassin in marksmanship. However, Ramona’s skills that have led to her Bullseye moniker would work just as well if she operated as a heroic Hawkeye.

If Captain America is building a new team of Avengers to take down James, “Jarvis,” and other villains, Ramona’s Bullseye would be a powerful addition to this heroic crew. If future covers are to be believed, Bullseye will soon be transforming into Marvel’s newest iteration of Hawkeye, a powerful force for good who started her career as a bad guy, just like Clint Barton.
