Avengers’ New Speedster Puts a Body Horror Twist on Quicksilver’s Powers

Avengers’ New Speedster Puts a Body Horror Twist on Quicksilver’s Powers

Warning: contains spoilers for Weapon X-Men #1The newest iteration of the iconic Uncanny Avengers, debuting in Weapon X-Men #1, sees the united Avengers team adding the X-Men speedster hero Transonic to their roster. Transonic, or Laurie Tromette, is a powerful mutant with the ability to move at supersonic speeds, like the Avengers hero Quicksilver, but Laurie’s powers give a decidedly body horror twist to the traditional speedster classification.

Weapon X-Men, a follow-up series to the one-shot Original X-Men, sees a group of alternate reality Wolverines traversing the Multiverse in an attempt to find and destroy the newest version of the villainous Onslaught.

The X-Men’s Transonic Has A Beautiful But Disturbing Ability

Transonic X-Men Missile and Mermaid transformations

Laurie Tromette debuted in 2010’s Uncanny X-Men #526 as one of the first people to manifest a mutant ability after the Scarlet Witch’s “No more mutants” Decimation event. Laurie began to develop hard blue skin and was about to commit suicide after several days of torment, before Hope Summers grabbed onto her and activated her latent powers, giving Laurie the power of flight. Laurie became one of Hope’s “Five Lights,” training with her to be the newest generation of mutant heroes, and taking on the moniker Transonic after it was uncovered she could not only fly but travel at incredible speed.

Transonic is not a speedster in the traditional sense, like Quicksilver or the Flash, but is more similar to other flying speedsters like Alpha Flight’s mutant hero Northstar. What sets Laurie apart from any of these heroes is that her superspeed flying is facilitated by major physiological changes to her body, a disturbing yet oddly beautiful facet of her already incredible power. Transonic’s shifting crystalline form can transform into what looks to be a missile, giving her greatly enhanced aerodynamics. Even more shocking, under the right conditions Laurie’s body will shift into a flying fish-like creature, giving her greater maneuverability and speed.

Earth-616s Uncanny Avengers Could Use A Hero Like Transonic

X-Men Transonic flying

The Uncanny Avengers in Weapon X-Men #1 are a fierce group of proactive heroes, with Transonic fighting alongside iconic X-Men like Jean Grey and Magneto, as well as Avengers heroes like Spider-Man. Laurie is shown to be an important member of the team, getting to yell the classic “Avengers Assemble!” line, and proving that she would be a great addition to Earth-616s Unity Squad. Transonic has not been a major part of the X-Men’s Krakoan Age, but seeing her used so effectively on Earth-93068 will hopefully inspire writers to use her more in the From the Ashes era.

Laurie Tromette, X-Men’s fabulous speedster with a body horror twist, is shown to be a perfect addition to the Uncanny Avengers roster, using her Quicksilver-fast powers to take out two Wolverine variants by herself. The Avengers would be lucky to have a hero like Transonic on their team, and her incredible body shifting could impressively intimidate any foes she might face.
