Avatar Shouldn’t Wait Until Movie 5 To Visit Earth

It’s been revealed that a portion of the upcoming Avatar 5 will be set on Earth, but this seems like too long to wait, since there’s still three sequels to be released before then. It’s taken James Cameron thirteen years to finish the production of Avatar: The Way of Water, but Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 are set to release in two-year intervals after the December 16, 2022, release of The Way of Water. In the next film, viewers will be reintroduced to the vibrant world of Pandora, picking up over a decade after Jake Sully found his permanent home living among the Na’vi in his avatar body.

Speaking to io9, Avatar producer Jon Landau revealed that, if they’re lucky enough to make the fifth installment, a portion of Avatar 5 will be set on Earth. He states, “we go to [Earth] to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth,” not only suggesting that Neytiri will survive through all five of the Avatar sequels, but also that, in the fifth outing, she’ll somehow find herself on her husband’s homeworld. Even though this does sound like an interesting direction to take the Sully family’s story, there’s been some confusion as to why the journey to Earth isn’t happening sooner.

Why The Na’vi Should Go To Earth Sooner Than Avatar 5

Waiting until Avatar 5 to travel to Earth just means that audiences will have to wait for at least six years to see some Earth-bound action unfold. It’s not hard to imagine that the other Avatar sequels will have more than enough stories to tell on Pandora, especially since the human RDA are set to return to Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water. However, one of James Cameron’s biggest motivations for creating the Avatar films is to push his message of caring for our own planet, so leaving this plot line until Avatar 5 might be too late for people to remember the true point of the Avatar storyline.

So, Avatar 3 & 4 Are Both Set On Pandora?

Avatar focused on Jake Sully’s personal journey, Avatar: The Way of Water will explore Pandora’s oceans, and it can be assumed that Avatar 3 and 4 will investigate new areas of Cameron’s beautiful world. All this while the overarching story of the conflict between the Na’vi and humanity progresses.

It might be worth the wait until Avatar 5 to see the Na’vi on Earth, especially since these moments could provide some important plot points, with Landau stating “not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good… we want to expose Neytiri to that.” This could mean that Earth-bound scenes might bring about a realization that could wrap up the entire storyline, perhaps teaching either side to live in peace, protecting their worlds without harming the other. Avatar 5 hasn’t yet entered production, but it set for release in 2028. Until then, the Avatar: The Way of Water movie releases on December 16, 2022, and is sure to be a smash-hit.
