Atlanta Season 3 Is Totally Happening

Atlanta Season 3 Is Totally Happening

One of the best shows on television isn’t going anywhere, as FX renews Atlanta for a third season. The series’ second season — titled Atlanta Robbin’ Season — recently came to a close, with critics handing down effusive praise for the show’s endlessly inventive, often surreal storytelling, as well as its direction by Hiro Murai, Amy Seimetz, and series creator and star, Donald Glover. With that kind of praise, plus Glover’s popularity stemming from his work as Childish Gambino and his appearance as Lando Calrissian in this summer’s Solo: A Star Story, it’s really no surprise that FX would want to another season of Atlanta

That the series is returning so soon after season 2, however, is a bit more surprising. FX is known for giving its talent a great deal of creative freedom, even when that freedom means taking more time off between seasons than usual. That was certainly the case with Atlanta season 2, which premiered 16 months after season 1 came to a close. That was mostly due to Glover’s commitments in a galaxy far, far away, but given his creative output in 2018 so far, it wouldn’t be out of the question to think he and the Atlanta crew might want some time to recharge.

But as Glover demonstrated recently by sharing a script from the canceled Deadpool animated series, he’s pretty much always working. That means fans of Atlanta will get more episodes in 2019, a fact that likely also made FX happy. Nick Grad, co-president of original programming at FX had this to say about the series’ renewal.

Atlanta Season 3 Is Totally Happening

Atlanta is phenomenal, achieving and exceeding what few television series have done,” said Grad. “With Atlanta Robbin’ Season, Donald and his collaborators elevated the series to even greater heights, building on the enormous success of their award-winning first season. We’re grateful to the producers and our extraordinary cast and crew for achieving this level of excellence, and we share the excitement with our audience about the third season knowing they will continue to take us to unexpected and thrilling places.”

FX continues to deliver some of the best shows on television year after year, and with the acclaimed The Americans wrapping up its six-season run recently, it’s good to know the network has another critically acclaimed series that will be sticking around for at least another season.
