As “The Longest Romance in X-Men History” Officially Ends, Marvel Sets Up the Ultimate Hero vs Villain Grudge Match

Warning: SPOILERS for X-Men #31More so than almost any other Marvel Comics team, the X-Men are well known for the iconic romances between many of their most popular heroes. From Cyclops and Jean Grey to Beak and Angel Salvador, there’s no shortage of romance amongst the Merry Mutants. But thanks to the Fall of X, the X-Men’s longest lasting relationship has come to abrupt end.

X-Men #31 – by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto, and VC’s Clayton Cowles – follows up the previous issue’s explosive revelation that, following her murder by the High Evolutionary, the psyche of Talon is alive within the mindscape of her lover, Synch. Unfortunately, her limited survival happens to be killing her psychic host.

With the rest of the team fighting for survival against Nimrod, Talon forces Synch to let her go, sacrificing herself to save what’s left of mutantkind. Enraged, Synch brings the battle to Nimrod, setting up their final face-off as one of the Fall of X’s premiere grudge matches.

Synch & Talon’s X-Romance Was New, But Powerful

Although Synch and Talon’s romance is a recent story development over the last few years, their courtship during their centuries in the Vault makes them the longest-running X-Men relationship in continuity. Fans didn’t get to see the entirety of that development, but the relationship has its fair share of supporters. Witnessing it come to a sudden end is as heartbreaking for many readers as it is for Synch himself, though it does set up what will clearly be one of the greatest battles in X-Men history.

In X-Men #31, Synch is confirmed to have taken on the powers of a god, and yet he’s still unable to finish Nimrod. Just what extent Synch will have to go to against the X-Men’s ultimate opponent remain to be seen. However, it is clear that whatever power he deploys will have to be world-shattering, at the very least. With the final act of the Krakoan Era rapidly reaching its climax, the death of Talon has been one of the story’s most emotionally wrought, while Synch has been set up to play a pivotal role in the ending.

Talon’s Death Has To Be Worth It

Synch and Talon were quickly rising up the ranks of X-Men’s iconic romances in the eyes of many fans. Their relationship made a clear impact on readers, and as a result, the tragic abridgment of their growing intimacy was exactly the kind of emotional blow the Fall of X is designed to deliver. Whether Talon’s death can be undone, and whether Synch can survive his quest to avenge her, remain to be determined. At the very least, Marvel Comics’ Synch and the rest of the X-Men will fight to make sure her death wasn’t totally in vain.
