Set photos from the upcoming Arrowverse crossover revealed the TV multiverse’s version of the Trigger Twins. The Trigger Twins aren’t mainstream DC villains but they have a very long history. They were first introduced back in 1951 as twin brothers and heroes. Walt and Wayne Trigger were vigilantes who roamed DC’s Old West. The central premise was that Walt was the town’s sheriff and had to hide his extracurricular activities.
The Trigger Twins were revived in 1993 in the pages of Batman’s Detective Comics but this time as villains. The modern version of the characters, named Tad and Tom Trigger, kept the Old West aesthetic but used it as a gimmick to run around Gotham. It was never clear if Tad and Tom were actually related or just looked alike, but they had a few years of minor villainy before fading to obscurity. The Arrowverse appears to be taking inspiration from the more villainous versions but turning the Twins into bikers, not cowboys, and making them into Oliver Queen and Barry Allen.

The first hint of the Trigger Twins came from Grant Gustin. Gustin, who plays Barry Allen on The Flash, posted a picture of himself and Arrow’s Stephen Amell on Instagram with the caption, “’The what? The Twister Sisters??’” The joking caption obviously hints at the Trigger Twins and may even spoil a line from the crossover itself. It wouldn’t be until a tweet from Arrowverse fan @ThemysciraBound featuring set photos of the Arrowverse crossover that the detailing on the jackets was confirmed to read, “Trigger Twins.”
This (presumably) confirms that Amell and Gustin will be playing at least three characters in the Arrowverse crossover, including their original characters. The first official poster for the “Elseworlds” event revealed that Amell and Gustin will be swapping characters. Amell will play an alternate universe Flash and Gustin an alternate Green Arrow. With that in mind, the Trigger Twins likely aren’t the main villains of the crossover. They aren’t even confirmed to be antagonists, though their all-black attire and crossed handguns emblem doesn’t exactly scream hero.
The Trigger Twins are, more than likely, very minor characters in the crossover. They might even be the first introduction to the Elseworld plot for the audience and characters playing a brief role in the first episode of the crossover, which will technically be an episode of The Flash. Jeremy Davies has been cast as a mad-scientist type in the crossover and his experiments could bring about the arrival of the Trigger Twins. The Twins aren’t likely to be the last new characters that Amell or Gustin will play in the crossover either. With the title of “Elseworlds,” it can be expected that the event will see many actors play alternate versions of themselves, upping the ante from “Crisis on Earth-X” where a select few actors played Nazi versions of themselves.
The character switching probably won’t be limited to main cast either. Amell already revealed in a tweet that Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will be wearing an all-black suit. It’s possible that this black-clad Superman could be the main version from Supergirl’s Earth in all-new outfit but it’s far more likely that this a Superman from another world. If a relatively minor Arrowverse character like Superman is getting an alternate version there’s no telling which actor could play all-new roles. The Arrowverse may even use this embracing of alternate universes to introduce Batwoman into Earth-1. Ruby Rose’s Batwoman coming from a different universe would be a nice way to explain her absence in the Arrowverse before this point and avoid the problem of having to explain her cousin, Batman.
