Arrow Season 5 Images & Synopsis Introduce Human Target

It’s been a year of changes for the Arrowverse. On The Flash, Barry’s trip through time has altered his reality in ways he’s only just beginning to learn about. Meanwhile in Supergirl, while Cat Grant is away, there are a number of new characters in town, including Lena Luthor, Maggie Sawyer, Miss Martian and Mon-El. And Legends of Tomorrow has benefited from the inclusion of the JSA (the Justice Society of America).

Yet no series has perhaps changed more than Arrow, as Oliver Queen’s friends are divided now more than ever before. Felicity, Thea and Diggle are each pursuing their own lives, rather than fighting criminals on Team Arrow, leaving Oliver to build a new team by recruiting new, amateur vigilantes appearing in Star City. One of those new, young heroes is Rene Ramirez, aka Wild Dog, who was captured in the latest episode by new villain Tobias Church.

Oliver has vowed to rescue Rene from Church, but to do so he’s going to need someone with a particular set of skills. In this week’s episode, titled ‘Human Target,’ he’ll turn to his old friend Christopher Chance, aka the Human Target (guest star Jessica Jones‘ Wil Traval), for help. As a private investigator and bodyguard who assumes fake identities, thus becoming a human target, he may be the best person to infiltrate Church’s new criminal crew. “Human Target” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

DC COMICS’ CHRISTOPHER CHANCE AKA HUMAN TARGET TEAMS UP WITH OLIVER — When Tobias Church (guest star Chad L. Coleman) captures and tortures one of Oliver’s new recruits, Oliver must turn to an old friend, Christopher Chance (guest star Wil Traval) AKA the Human Target, for help. Meanwhile, Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) worlds collide when Detective Malone (guest star Tyler Ritter) joins the ACU. Laura Belsey directed the episode written by Oscar Balderrama & Sarah Tarkoff (#505). Original airdate 11/2/2016.”

Human Target was also the title of a FOX series from 2010, where comic book character Christopher Chance was played by Fringe actor Mark Valley. During the show’s two seasons, rather than taking on the target’s identity himself (like he does in the comic book), Chance protected his clients by instead becoming part of their lives. It’s likely his character on Arrow, however, will be more similar to the comic book version.

Chance is reportedly not only here to help the Green Arrow rescue Rene but also to protect Mayor Oliver Queen from a potential assassination attempt. One assumes, he’ll take over the identity of one Mr. Queen in order to find out just who is trying to kill him. Or another option is he’ll help Oliver fake the assassination like we saw in the trailer, while Chance watches from afar. The sky’s the limit for how the fake and real rescue will go down, but so far it seems like Human Target is only sticking around for this one episode.

Arrow ‘Human Target’ airs this Wednesday @8pm on The CW.
