Army of Thieves Poster Teases More Safes But Less Zombies

Director and star Matthias Schweighöfer unveiled the first poster for Army of Thieves, teasing more safes but fewer zombies in the Netflix film. The comedic heist film acts as a live-action prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, in which a group of mercenaries is hired to recover $200 million from a casino vault in Las Vegas. The hitch is that the gambling capital of the country has been walled off amidst a zombie outbreak.

Development on Army of Thieves was announced a little over a year after Netflix acquired the rights to Snyder’s zombie heist film alongside the anime prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. The story will center on Schweighöfer’s Ludwig Dieter in his early days of safecracking as he is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves. Putting Schweighöfer at the helm, the prequel is right around the corner, and the streaming platform is building anticipation for its arrival.

With just a few days left until its Comic-Con@Home panel, Schweighöfer took to Twitter to unveil the first poster for Army of Thieves. Featuring a safe dial donning Dieter’s orange headphones, the poster promises the film will feature plenty of safes though fewer zombies. Check out the new poster below:

Since he arrived in Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Schweighöfer’s Dieter has become a fan-favorite character in the filmmaker’s roster, which made a prequel film centered on the character an exciting draw for audiences. While the poster may keep much of the plot still under wraps, its tease of moving away from the undead antics of its predecessor is both intriguing and possibly disappointing for some. Snyder’s first film may not have been his best effort, but his exploration of a unique type of undead threat was a plus for those on both sides of the fence.

Though the poster teases fewer zombies in Army of Thieves, it doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be any featured in the film. Snyder has confirmed the film will include members of the undead despite its shift towards an Italian Job-inspired heist genre. Also, the plot does reference that the story takes place during the early days of the Vegas zombie outbreak. Only time will tell how the zombie tie into the heist story when the first sneak peek arrives at Comic-Con@Home this week, and the film hits Netflix later this year.
