Argylle 2 Plans Are Bit More Complex As Director Reveals Franchise’s Future

Warning: This article contains spoilers for an end-credits tease in Argylle.

Argylle 2 and the future possibilities of the franchise just got even more complicated. Director Matthew Vaughn’s new spy movie stars Henry Cavill as the fictional Agent Argylle, whose exploits land his author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), in hot water when her accurate predictions draw the attention of a real-life spy syndicate. The movie’s release was preceded by the publication of the first Argylle book by the supposedly real, but nevertheless mysterious, author Elly Conway, and the end credits of the movie confuse matters even further by promising Argylle: Book One – The Movie.

Polygon recently sat down for an interview with Matthew Vaughn to promote the Argylle release, where he elaborated on this end credits promise. If Apple greenlights the project, the plan would be to adapt the in-universe Argylle plot into its own feature without the meta element, then follow that with Argylle 2, bringing the “real-life” characters like Elly Conway back for a new adventure. Vaughn asks, “if we pull both of those off, then who knows what’s next?” Read his full quote below:

So [after] Book One, then we would definitely do Argylle 2 the movie, which continues with the characters and the meta craziness. We’ve got some really fun ideas for that. And if we pull both of those off, then who knows what’s next?

Could This Argylle Plan Actually Happen?

In order for this entirely unique, topsy-turvy franchise to get off the ground, the first Argylle movie still needs to be a success. Its opening weekend gross and overall theatrical run remain to be seen, but its $200 million budget likely means that it will need to make $400 million or more just to break even. However, the movie’s future prospects might not die out entirely even if it doesn’t hit that mark, as its eventual streaming debut on Apple TV+ could provide the company with enough of a subscriber draw for them to greenlight a follow-up feature and more.

Although it has taken some time to come to fruition, Matthew Vaughn’s previous spy movie franchise Kingsman has proven his ability to get unique franchise offerings off the ground. The first two Kingsman movies, which dramatize the comic book series of the same name, are relatively straightforward, following the adventures of the fledgling spy Eggsy (Taron Egerton). However, the 2021 prequel The King’s Man, which depicts the creation of the titular organization, uses an entirely different approach by taking place in World War I and including numerous real-life historical figures.

The King’s Man did prove to be a theatrical flop, only making $121.1 million against its $100 million budget amid a pandemic-depressed period at the box office. However, its mere existence proves that Vaughn has the ability to challenge the status quo of franchise filmmaking. If enough people show interest in the franchise during the next few weeks, Vaughn’s very unusual plans for Argylle‘s Elly Conway and Argylle 2 could very well go into motion.
