‘Argo’, ‘Gangster Squad’, ‘Tintin’, & ‘War Horse’ Snag New Release Dates

Warner Bros. has finally settled on theatrical release dates for two anticipated titles that began filming just a few weeks ago: Ben Affleck’s next directorial effort, the true-story CIA operation thriller, Argo – and director Ruben Fleischer’s own inspired-by-real-events project, the crime tale Gangster Squad.

Steven Spielberg’s dual Winter 2011 releases – the motion-capture animated comic book flick, The Adventures of Tintin, and the artsy World War I drama, War Horse – also have new U.S. release dates. Don’t worry, they’ve merely been bumped up a few days.

Adventures of Tintin is now slated to hit the U.S. on December 21st, 2011, where it will open directly against David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The latter title will begin showing earlier in 250 theaters around the U.S. on December 16th – the majority of which will be IMAX screens, since the latest installment in the Tom Cruise spy franchise was partially shot in the format.

War Horse has likewise been bumped up a few days to Christmas of this year. The Oscar-hopeful film will compete directly against the likes of the latest alien invasion thriller, The Darkest Hour – as well as director Stephen Daldry’s inspirational melodrama, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close – for the attention of holiday season moviegoers.

Argo will arrive in theaters on September 14th, 2012. That means Affleck’s third round in the director’s chair is being setup to (possibly) repeat the success of his cops-and-robbers drama, The Town, which proved to be both a critical and financial hit when it opened around the same time in 2010. Argo will open against Resident Evil: Retribution, but there shouldn’t be a whole lot of overlap between the two titles. We recently wrote up about production on Argo so be sure to check that out.

Gangster Squad is now scheduled to hit theaters on October 19, 2012, where it is currently set to open against the star-filled romantic comedy The Wedding (a.k.a. The Big Wedding) – which features the likes of Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, and Amanda Seyfried, among others. Suffice it to say, that should have little effect on Fleischer’s period cops-and-gangsters drama.

Feel free to let us know which of these four titles – The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Argo, and Gangster Squad – you are looking forward to the most.
