Archer Getting Another Series Finale With A Major Three-Part Event Despite Season 14’s Ending

Archer will get a three-part special event after signing off for season 14. It was announced in May that Archer season 14 would be the last, with many assuming that the show was getting the chance to bow out after a lengthy and enduring run. Archer debuted back in 2009, switching from FX to sibling network FXX, and withstood the era of streaming prestige television that seems to be winding down. But it seems the titular bumbling spy is not ready to say goodbye just yet.

With a Screen Rant representative at the Archer panel at the New York Comic Con, FXX has ordered a new three-part finale for the animated spy comedy. The new finale, “Archer: Into the Cold,” will debut Sunday, December. 17 on both FX and FXX. It will also be available to stream the next day on Hulu. The news comes just days after what had been advertised as the Archer series finale.

It’s A Good Thing Archer Is Coming Back

In what was billed as the final episode of Archer, the UN decided to make all private spy agencies illegal. This forces The Agency to shut down or face federal consequences. This development happens because The Agency has always been a black eye in the show’s universe. It’s not an ending of character death and memorable violence, as has been predicted. In the end, The Agency tries to take action that could help its fate, saving the UN from a drone attack, but it doesn’t make a difference.

The Agency’s actions highlight their heroism to an extent, but the UN does not change its ruling. Elsewhere, the closing of season 14 does seem more like a finale. Archer season 14, for example, brings back Cyril, who shares a significant moment with the titular spy. The two rivals even bond, and there’s also a speech by Cyrill that does a good job of summarizing the series.

However, some longtime Archer devotees found that the end of season 14 was lacking. The three-part finale, arriving in just a couple of months, could address those concerns and serve as the true farewell for a series that has achieved an impressive run that season 14 lacked.
