Apple TV+’s Servant: 10 Things That Don’t Make Sense

Apple TV+’s Servant: 10 Things That Don’t Make Sense

There’s no doubt that the Apple TV+ original series Servant from famous movie director M. Night Shyamalan is intriguing. Dubbed one of the streaming service’s best exclusives, it fits with Shyamalan’s signature style in that it is warped, twisted, dark, and thrilling.

With that said, there are a lot of things that don’t make sense. In some cases, it’s intentional and what doesn’t make sense really isn’t supposed to. In many cases, the belief is that everything will eventually make sense by the end. Indeed, crazy Reddit theories about what’s truly going on flood the Internet.

Still, for now, two seasons in, with a third already confirmed, there are many things that don’t make sense and need further clarification.

Sean Not Getting Treated For His Burn

Apple TV+’s Servant: 10 Things That Don’t Make Sense

In a season one scene, Sean realizes he can’t feel pain and has also lost his sense of taste. In part to test this and also in part as a well to express his feeling of being numb from losing Jericho, he holds his hand over the flame of the gas stove.

He burns it badly, yet he is never seen going to a hospital or doctor to get it treated. Instead, he wraps it in a bandage as though it’s a simple burn from touching a hot pot, even as his skin is clearly damaged. Wouldn’t he be worried about infection? This one perpetuates the theory, one of many posted on sites like Reddit about the show, that he might not really be alive.

Dorothy’s Job

Another theory suggests that Dorothy isn’t really still a reporter and Sean continues to play old tapes of her previous segments to keep up that facade. Where she goes during the days when she is supposedly working is a mystery. But some viewers believe she was fired a long time ago.

Nonetheless, there are a lot of weird things about her segments, including the fact that they go from her being an anchor to covering serious news topics to then covering fun local events. They almost seem like a progression of a career over the span of decades, not just a single year worth of reporting.

No One Else Knowing About Jericho’s Death

Whether Sean and Julian want to keep Dorothy in the dark about Jericho’s death using the therapy doll in his place until she can come to terms with what happened or not, it doesn’t make sense that no one else would know and tell her. Is everyone in on the deception?

If she was working, her co-workers would have known that she was pregnant. And not ever seeing the baby or even photos, they must be curious.

The Police Officer Not Suspecting Anything

The police officer was sympathetic towards Sean and Dorothy and she understood that Dorothy was grieving in her own way and needed to come to terms with what happened in her own time. But she even showed on her extended visit that she suspected something was odd.

Despite this, she never followed up on her visit. It seems strange that there was no further investigation, given things seemed overtly awry.

Sean And Julian Keeping The Truth From Dorothy For So Long

Servant Rupert Grint

It’s sweet that Sean and Julian care so much about Dorothy and want her to realize the truth in her own time and process her son’s death in a way that will be most beneficial. They fear what she’ll do once the repressed memories come back. But for how long do they think they can keep up the ruse?

The existence of the new baby gives Sean hope that maybe they can raise him as Jericho. But is his hope that Dorothy will never recall the truth? That doesn’t seem like a good path to go down.

George’s Death Never Being Reported

George standing in Leanne's bedroom in a suit, looking at Julian who has his fists up ready to fight

In one scene, George leaves the house and gets hit by a car while Leanne watches from the attic window. Did he just disappear? Did anyone call in the accident? Did the person who hit him drive away? Weren’t the cops or ambulance called, in which case Sean and Dorothy surely would have heard it outside of their house?

George seemed to have supernatural abilities. Nonetheless, the fact that police didn’t knock on their door to question if they saw what happened or figure out that George was in their house just before his death seems odd.

The Cult Members’ Supernatural Abilities

Supernatural abilities aren’t supposed to make sense, but the nature of the cult members’ abilities, why or how they possess them, and why and how they use them, remains up in the air.

From Uncle George’s strange potion that seemingly healed Sean’s hand overnight to Leanne’s magical kiss that appeared to have revived Julian from the dead, there’s a lot of it that still needs to be explained.

Where Was Jericho The Whole Time?

A close up of baby Jericho in his crib, which is actually a fake baby

Jericho had been taken by the cult but his whereabouts were always unknown. Leanne apparently knew where he was but refused to tell them.

However, after Dorothy saved Leanne’s life and Leanne killed Aunt Josephine, it seemed that the passage of time between these events and when Leanne was seen holding Jericho in his nursery in the Turner home was far too quick. How did she get him back there so soon? Was he that close by? She was never seen leaving the front door to go get him. Or was this all further related to the unexplained circumstances surrounding her supernatural abilities?

Roscoe’s Family Not Reporting Him Missing

M Night Shyamalan Servant Apple TV Season 2 Episode 2 Spaceman Roscoe

In the first episode of season two, Roscoe is seen waking up in his car outside of the Turner home, believing that he simply fell asleep the same night the cult members showed up for Leanne. But in reality, in one of the biggest reveals of season two, much more time had passed.

He had no recollection of the time he lost but for small snippets of information (at least that he was willing to reveal) during his hypnosis. He mentioned a wife and daughter yet they never reported him missing. It could be explained away, as he mentioned, because given the nature of his job as a private investigator, he could often be gone for nights at a time. But there’s no reason he couldn’t at least message his wife to confirm that he was OK. She didn’t find it suspicious when she didn’t hear a word from him, day after day?

Josephine Dead In The Basement

Josephine’s dead body is seen stuck in a hideaway corner of the Turner’s creepy basement. This does not seem logical nor a viable long-term solution. This is not something Sean, especially, would want in the basement where he stores food and his precious wine collection.

It seems like it doesn’t add up to just leave the body there.
